Guest Speaker Doug Aykroyd, Former Scoutmaster, Hampton Boy Scout Troop #177, and his wife Elizabeth, Bill Walker, cousin of Rick Considine
Doug Aykroyd, Former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 177 in Hampton, was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow Award by Larry Marsolais and Jim Waddell. Acknowledging his greater than 25 years in service of Troop 177, Larry gave an amazing tribute to Mr. Aykroyd, describing the shared vision of Mr Aykroyd’s leadership with that of Rotarians - Service Above Self. Prior to the award, Mr. Aykroyd gave a fascinating talk about the direction of the Boy Scouts of America in the coming year - the Family Scouting initiative. The BSA is promoting the development of Packs that can be diversified into only boys, only girls or mixed boys and girls. In February, girls will begin to join the Scouts formally, as determined by the chartering organization of the Pack. Girls will be called Scouts, and are expected to participate and achieve the same requirements as boys, from Scout to Eagle. Mr. Aykroyd spoke of the many activities of Pack 177 which has 35 very active cubs participating year round in programs and activities. The Scout programs have a singular purpose: to promote the mission of Scouting, which is to instill in young people the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Laws, thereby promoting ethical and moral decisions over a lifetime. In addition to updating Rotarians about the future of Scouting, Mr. Aykroyd spoke of the strong parallels between the mission of Scouting and that of Rotary. Paul Harris and James E. West, the first Chief Scout Executive, were good friends who traveled the country together establishing Boy Scout Councils. The Scout Oath and Scout Laws embody a set of principals consistent with the principles of the Four Way Test. Given our shared history and shared ideals, and the reality of his service to our young people, it is more than appropriate that Mr. Aykroyd be the recipient of a Paul Harris Fellow Award, as he is also a James E. West Fellow!

Barbara Lizotte reminded all to stop by and join fellow Rotarians at the American Red Cross Blood Drive on September 28th. Donors are rewarded by friends, food and good feelings!
Ray Tweedie is looking for 10 more Rotarians to help staff the Smuttynose Rockfest 5K and Half Marathon on Sunday, September 30th.The biggest shift in need is the 6am - 9am shift. Jobs in need are helping folks park in the town lot, staff the marked streets for resident and runner protection, and help monitor the beer garden. Ray reminded all that this is a great way to say thanks to Loco Sports, which donates $2500 to the Rotary shopping spree.
David Longo and Geoff Merrill noted that 80 golfers and 15 sponsors are on deck for the 20th Annual Hampton Rotary Golf Tournament scheduled for October 1st. They are still seeking golfers to join in on the fun.
Paula Rappolt announced that the Head Start Reading Program is back this fall. Rotarians are invited to volunteer to read books chosen by the teachers, once a week from 11am - 11:15am. Children truly enjoy this experience. It gives those hard working teachers a break in their busy day and readers are welcomed with warm smiles and often hugs from a sweet group of grateful children.
Mark your calendars for the Hampton Rotary 50th anniversary celebration to be held on March 23rd at the Atlantic Grill in Rye. Larry Marsolais is chairing the festivities and has room available on the committee.
John Ferris reported on the Rotary District 7780 Recovery Initiative Committee chaired by Chief Robert McKenzie of the Kennebunk Police Dept. There will be a Portland Recovery Workforce Job Fair sponsored by the Committee on October 11th, at the Portland Expo in Portland, Maine to support a return to employment for addicts in recovery. In late November, there will be an opioid overdose recognition and response class at York County Community College. This is an important skill that sadly all should learn given the devastation of the opioid epidemic.
Ray Tweeidie announced that the Distinguished Citizen of the Year celebration will occur at the Ashworth Hotel on November 8th. He will be sending out a form for nominations for the award.
HAPPY DOLLARS:
Given the presence of Doug Aykroyd, many Happy Dollars described Rotarian connection and history with the Scouts. Rick Considine, who achieved Eagle Scout, easily recited the Scout Oath and Scout Law with our guest speaker. Joan Correll announced that her grandson Marsten has become a cub scout and could not wait to share his brand new uniform with his grandma. JP Pontbriand fondly recalled the adventure of his time white water rafting on the Kennebec with Scouts. And Geoff Merrill warmly reported that he had a wonderful Den Mother in Anne Russell!
Jim Waddell bemoaned his last sailing class, but is happily awaiting his first ski training! A skiing opportunity awaits as he heads off to Utah to celebrate his son’s 50th birthday.
Jim Westfall reported back on his awesome tour of the United States which put 8,142 miles on his hard working MINI Cooper. His car trip took him to numerous cities and sites including a ride along Route 66, and a trip through LA without hitting an expressway. He also saw Yosemite, Nashville, Reno, Telluride, Denver and lots more of this beautiful nation. He recommended all visit our nation’s many sites and cities for the experience of a lifetime.
Sherry Rand was a guest speaker at a meeting at Geoff Merrill’s office. Barbara Lizotte reported that Geoff was a really good sport as he took a ribbing from Sherry. Sherry had stopped in to share info about her business Pom Express.
Barbara Lizzote offered a Happy Dollar for Dave Reid in honor of the Cleveland Browns win! Congrats Dave - as they say “hard times don’t last”…
Sherry Rand happily reported that her son-in-law will be getting his new foot this week. He has persevered, in spite of falling on his shoulder last week. It’s been a long haul but he is moving forward. Meanwhile, Sherry plans on hitting the trail heading out for Colorado, Minnesota, Seattle and Italy.
Rich Gibadlo just keeps on going! He was set to talk to the Interact kids in search of early risers to help out with parking for the Smuttynose 5K and Rockfest.
Rick Considine described his Dad’s commitment to Rick's cousin Bill and family. Bill sadly lost his Dad at a young age, and Rick therefore traveled every weekend with his Dad to Rhode Island, where Bill lived. One lucky outcome of the sad loss of his uncle was how connected Rick grew with cousin Bill.
Paula Rappolt enjoyed an Alaskan cruise and spent some vacation time in Anchorage and Seattle. She recommends the journey as it was simply beautiful at all ports and destinations. She has made excellent plans to spend the Christmas holidays traveling to Ireland with her family.
President Donna had a great, albeit brief, visit with her very busy California son who came home for a wedding. She also attended her grandson Gavin’s first cross country meet. Gavin surprised all and revealed his true team spirit and perseverance. He ran 2 miles with only one sneaker and one sock, having lost a sneaker along the way.

Attendance is documented weekly through our sign-in sheet at the front desk. If you can't make a meeting, (and most of us can't from time to time, we're all busy people) you have lots of opportunity to get credit by simply doing a make-up two weeks prior or two weeks after a missed meeting. Visit another Rotary club meeting, attend one of our board meetings, a committee meeting, participate in a service project (blood drive, soup kitchen, bell ringing, etc.) or one of our many fundraisers (Reach to the Beach, Golf Tournament, etc) or simply do an on-line make-up.
