Our speaker's topic for this week is very timely since a number of members and guests will be visiting the US this summer, for business and/or pleasure. Mr. Westaway will provide an overview of tax regulations that help minimize the taxes that are payable in the US.

Topic: Doing business or buying property in the US (For Canadians)
Title: "Avoiding U.S. Tax—What Too Few People Know"
Too little attention is paid to uniquely cross-border tax issues. These issues arise both in respect of our business dealings and our personal affairs. It is trite to say that our businesses and our lives are increasingly global and yet the advice we get is too often limited to a given jurisdiction—the province, state or country in which the particular lawyer or accountant happens to practise. Mr. Westaway will be discussing issues of interest to any Canadian who carries on business in the United States, travels to the U.S. on business—even only as an employee—or who is thinking about buying a holiday home in the U.S.
