Utibe Effiong is now one in a million...1.2 million, actually. On Thursday, September 18 we were pleased to celebrate the induction of our newest member and addition to our Rotary family when UT joined the ranks of Rotarians worldwide who are committed to making this world a better place to live. Participating in club events, projects and activities requires the loving support of family and it was wonderful to have Eno Effiong in attendance at our induction ceremony. We would also like to thank Scott Nelson for sponsoring UT for membership. Welcome to the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor North, UT!
We would like to thank Don Patterson for warmly welcoming our members and visiting guests. This week, we had the pleasure of introducing visitors AG Jane McManus and her husband Mike McManus, Indwapal Munasinghe, guest of Phil Zepeda, our speaker, Kevin S. Devine and Eno-Obong Effiong, our newest Rotarian spouse. Thanks in advance to Tammy Broderick for serving as our greeter on September 25.
News to report from our September 16 board meeting: Stephanie Oliver was elected Treasurer and Past President Laura Van Steenis was named Membership Chair. We approved a $500 donation to the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan and we look forward to hearing from them at a future meeting about their local activities. We also agreed to consider options for ongoing maintenance of the Butterfly Garden in Gallup Park and will take this up at future board meetings.
Despite threatening storms and a tornado in Oakland County, we enjoyed a wonderful day at the Zoo. Thanks to your generous support, Team Great Expectations raised over $200 to End Polio Now and by all accounts, our first District Rotary Day was a successful event.
Thanks to Kevin Devine, Director of Student Media at Eastern Michigan University and President of the Michigan Collegiate Press Association for a thought-provoking presentation on First Amendment rights that opened with a song and then segued into a lively conversation that engaged everyone in the room. Kevin Devine is also an award-winning children's entertainer, songwriter and recording artist specializing in" rollicking, participatory music" for children and families and has also written songs for television shows including Barney and NCIS. If you want to hear more of Kevin's music, please visit his website http://thiskevindevine.bandcamp.com/ or contact Kevin at KevinDevine@SongSource.com to ask about local performance dates and times.
