We are proud to announce that our own Manish Mehta was this year's recipient of the Terry Youlton International Service Award. This prestigious award is presented to a District 6380 Rotarian for outstanding humanitarian work in countries with great need. Manish was present at Saturday's dinner featuring our guests of honor, Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko and Manish's darling mom. Congrats, Manish - we appreciate your tireless devotion to improving life for families in rural India and we are glad that the District recognizes your efforts.
Also at Saturday's dinner, our own PDG Gail Scott was recognized by Rotary International Annual Giving Officer Amanda Runge with a gorgeous bouquet of yellow roses for her outstanding work as conference liaison for Amanda's visit. In her thanks, Amanda noted that the gift of yellow roses is a long standing tradition in her family and a sign of respect and tribute to the special women in her life. We agree that Gail is worthy of this honor and distinction and proud that she is a member of our club.
Rescue missions and emergency aid continue to arrive in Nepal after a massive earthquake hit the country on April 25, killing at least 4800 people and injuring 9200. The 7.8 magnitude quake, the worst to hit Nepal in more than 80 years, has affected 8 million people in the country's 39 districts, including 1.4 million children requiring food assistance, according to government officials.
"Rotarians worldwide stand together in expressing a profound sadness at the devastation resulting from this weekend's deadly earthquake in Nepal," says RI President Gary C.K. Huang. "As we mourn the thousands of lives lost, Rotary joins other international agencies in providing immediate relief to survivors and mobilizing our expertise to support long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts throughout the country."
Rotary partner Shelter Box is sending a response team to the affected areas to determine immediate needs. Because of previous disasters in Nepal, the group already has tents and other nonfood items ready for deployment.A donation of $1,000 covers the costs of delivering emergency shelter and other lifesaving equipment to a family that has lost everything following a disaster.
