Stories

Charities in Michigan earn approximately $17 million annually through charitable gaming fundraisers. This money is used to further their charitable mission, resulting in a wide variety of much needed services being provided to countless individuals.

Despite this, there are numerous organizations and individuals who are opposed to charities conducting these types of fundraisers. Reasons for this opposition vary. Some are opposed to gaming for moral and philosophical reasons, others are for-profit organizations competing for the gaming revenue.

Charities need to work together to counter this opposition. One of the most effective ways to do this is through a letter to your legislator and a sample is provided here:

Letters to the Senate, House of Representatives and the Governor

Recent events at the Capitol have brought to our attention that it is imperative that the charities continue to contact their Senators and Representatives and the Governor to let them know about the services your organization provides to the community and  how devastating these rules will be to your organization.

A Sample Letter to Your Legislator:

Dear Senator/Representative/Governor:

I am a member of the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor North. I am opposed to the new rules being submitted by the Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm.

I urge the legislature to take action to stop these rules from being enacted.

Our ORGANIZATION conducts (4) charitable events per year.  We raise typically $2500 per event.  With these funds we provide the following services to Ann Arbor residents, to Washtenaw County residents and in support of international projects:

1. Supporting the children of the Green Baxter Court Housing Project through backpack drives, holiday gift drives and in the assistance of rehousing families displaced by the 2013 fire.

2. Contributions to the Boy Scotts, Nancy Perry Nursery School, Big Hearts for Seniors, Meals on Wheels

3. Ongoing support of the Butterfly Garden at Gallup Park.

Our support to these organizations would be dramatically reduced if we cannot raise funds through our Millionaire Party events.  This would be terrible for Michigan’s citizens who rely on organizations like ours to fill in the gaps where the state cannot or will not provide assistance.

 Sincerely,

NAME

Connect with your fellow Rotarians, family and friends for a fun Rotary District 6380 Day at the Zoo. The District needs strong estimates from each club regarding our attendance and t-shirt sizes. In order to have our red End Polio Now shirts in time for the event, please register by August 21st on the event website. If you need assistance with registration, please contact tamra.ward1@gmail.com

We're looking for super sleuths to form a team for this year's Scavenger Hunt Challenge at the District 6380's Rotary Day at the Detroit Zoo on September 21.  This promises to be a fun way to raise funds for the End Polio Now campaign.

Clubs are encouraged to form teams with two to four people per team - family and friends can be on a team with at least two Rotarians per team.Club teams can challenge each other or challenge a team from a neighboring club to see which team can raise the most money. The District has asked that we form our team NOW and is requesting a report on our team members. Early birds will also have an advantage in fundraising and pledges can be made online at https://rotaryday-district6380.eventbrite.com

A minimum of $50 per person/$200 per team is needed to participate in the Scavenger Hunt Challenge.  Prizes will be awarded to the top fundraising team and to the top individual fundraiser. A champion team will be drawn from all correct entries, prizes will be awarded to each member of the winning team.

Team check in will take place on September 21 from 11:00 to noon, the scavenger hunt ends at 2:00 pm Awards will be presented at 3:00 pm.

Our annual Meeting in the Garden will take place on September 11.  A box lunch will be served and we guarantee that there will be no ants at our picnic.
This week we welcomed Assistant Governor Jane McManus and her wonderful husband, Mike McManus,  visiting Rotarian from Sault St. Marie Diana Georges, Phil Zepeda's guest, Jennifer Rumschlag-Mejia, and Dr. Christian Casper, our guest speaker from U of M. Thank you Tammy Broderick for introducing our guests and our greeter on August 14 will be Stephanie Oliver.

We would also like to wish Virginia and Gordon Nordby a very happy anniversary as they celebrate 61 years of wedded bliss.

Next week's B.A.B.Es will be blasted by Stephanie Oliver.

We would like to celebrate the birthdays, anniversaries and blessed events of our Rotary family but discovered that we do not have complete information on file for our membership. This week's drawing was won by Assistant Governor Jane McManus and sold by Stephanie Oliver.  Just like the Publisher's Clearing House, next weeks' winner could be you, but you've got to be at our August 14 meeting to purchase your ticket from Tammy Broderick!
This week's Cookies for Make-Ups Basket was won by Dutch Nie. Thank you for reporting make-ups to our secretary, Tammy Broderick - our reported July attendance was 65.25%, up from 45.19% in July 2013.

As a reminder, your name will be entered in our weekly drawing each time you report a make-up meeting to Tammy. Participation in club events like Charity Poker night, visits to other clubs, Butterfly Garden work days can be reported as make-ups within two weeks of a missed meeting.
This week's Happy Dollars were given by:

John Copeland stepped up and shared the happy news that Keith Krings and Matt Copeland will chair the first annual Phil Zepeda Invitational.  Wow...we should be paying John!  Thank you Keith and Matt for taking the reins on this new fundraiser.
