Our third evening serving at the Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering this year is scheduled for Monday, March 20, 2023. I have been informed by our club BES coordinator, Ginny Wolkoff, that we need a man and woman to monitor the showers. Our first two evenings providing for the residents of BES were very successful and I hope we can fill our compliment of volunteers needed for the 20th. PDG Bob Hobaugh is the Chair for the 60th edition of Das Awkscht Fescht. Absolutely amazing how this is all done by volunteers and the history, not to mention it is self-funded and has always been profitable.
Das Awkscht Fescht, known to English speakers as “The August Festival,” (the “Fescht”) is a three-day show of antique cars, trucks, motorcycles and tractors, with sales of antique toys, cars and automobilia. It is also a cultural event in Macungie Memorial Park (the “Park”) whose family-friendly aspects include a swimming pool, live music, food, beverages and crafts. The principal show day is the first Saturday in August, with the start day being the prior Friday and concluding on the following Sunday. The Fescht is influenced in name and flavor by the Pennsylvania German culture found in Macungie. It remains one of the largest antique and classic motor vehicle shows east of the Mississippi River.
The Fescht began in 1964 and ran continuously through 2019 until the COVID-19 pandemic caused organizers to hold over until 2021. Then it resumed with shouts of gratitude. The Fescht has been conducted in five phases through 2021. It had roots in prior agricultural and car shows for the benefit of the Park. Its history reflects the passion of the Macungie Memorial Park Association (the “Association”), the Ontelaunee Region (“Ontelaunee”) of the Antique Automobile Club of America (“AACA”), and thousands of volunteers. They all enjoy antique motor vehicles while raising money to maintain and operate the Park. This article is based on presentations given by Bob Hobaugh beginning in 2013. Please read the History as the Macungie Memorial Park Association, a non-profit private activity – there are no tax dollars involved – was formed in 1944 to acquire and operate the Park. This evolution is an incredible example of community involvement from people all over the Lehigh Valley and East Coast.
We have been notified today of the passing of longtime MSR Rotarian, Frank Lulewitz, this past Saturday, March 4, 2023. Frank had been a Rotary member since 1990 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife, Jackie, and his entire family. Morning Star Rotary will make a $100 contribution to the Rotary Foundation in Frank’s memory. Frank J. Lulewitz, 81, of Bethlehem, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2023 in St. Luke’s Hospital. Born June 26, 1941 to Adam and Stella Lulewitz, he spent his childhood in Wyoming, PA. He was an amazing husband and father who always made us laugh and smile. All who knew Frank would agree. He was an avid fisherman who visited Alaska annually. He enjoyed being involved in numerous clubs including Ski Club, Golf Leagues, and Rotary Club. In his nearly 40-year career with Sanofi, aside from his numerous achievements and awards he made lasting friendships with his colleagues and health care professionals.
Survivors: He is survived by his loving wife Jackie who he celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary with this past December. Also surviving are his 3 daughters and their families, Terry and Terry Hinkle, granddaughters Laura and Andrea, grandson Matt; Linda and Jimmy Boris, grandson James and great-granddaughter Madelyn, granddaughter Emily; Suzie and Chris Hough, grandson Grayson. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and grand dogs that he loved.
Services: Funeral Services will be private. There are no calling hours. Arrangements by Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, Bethlehem. July 2022, District 7430 hosted the first STEM-YEA Academy, and we look forward to an even larger class this year.
We can only Imagine and hope that we inspired the 41 intellectually curious of the students we served to pursue a STEM career.
The fundraising efforts of the 1st Annual STEM YEA Big Ticket Reverse Raffle 2022 raised $18,000 to fully fund two important academy line items.
a. Student Celebration Dinner/Awards for all 161 guests
b. Students consumable swag bag valued at $100 each
Last year we sold 100 tickets to the BTRR fundraising event, this year our goal is to sell 150 tickets to the 2nd Annual Big Ticket Reverse Raffle (BTRR).
In return, we will be able to give away more money and prizes and keep the tuition costs down for our clubs.
