Jim Byrnes, the CEO of the Allentown Rescue Mission, visited Morning Star last Thursday.
Jim introduced ARM with a very dynamic video covering the many phases of help and support provided to their clients. The Gateway Emergency Shelter has a 66 bed occupancy and is open 365 days a year. It serves over 44,000 meals a year and provides over 22,000 bed nights per year. This is the role of the ARM in the perception of most people.
Jim went on to expound upon their Plan For Change which transitions from Intake in the Gateway Center through the Christian Living Program to the Clean Team, the Graduation Program and Independence for clients who complete the programs. The move to the second floor with some 40 beds is a real “hand-up” for clients who dedicate themselves to fulfilling the Plan For Change. The ultimate goal is an end to their homeless living with connections to a home church, full-time job, housing, bank account and maintaining sobriety. Come join students and their families, former students, board, volunteers, staff, and other friends of Bike Works. Meet our students and learn how we've grown. Have fun with our kids on a bike ride, and enjoy a picnic!
Open House | Noon - 1:30 pmLet students show you around our Allentown bike shop, and learn what they do in Earn a Bike and our other programs. See our newly renovated upstairs and our new van.
If you'd like, bring a bike and join students and staff on a bike ride to the Rose Garden Pavilion around 1 pm. Helmets required!
Picnic & Ride | 1 pm - 4 pm Meet us at the Rose Garden Pavilion for a picnic lunch, a ride around the park, and other informal activities.
Congressman Charlie Dent, one of our earliest supporters, plans to join us during the day, as does State Representative Mike Schlossberg. Members of the Chamber's Young Professionals Council and Liquid Interactive will be there as sponsors of our picnic, and members of the local Rotaries who helped us purchase our van will be on hand.
See you 9/20 to celebrate 20 great years of life lessons through bicycles!
Sincerely,
Kim Schaffer,
Executive Director
Note: Morning Star Rotary partnered with 3 other Rotary clubs and a District 7430 Grant to help Bike Works purchase a van to support their growing efforts. (See last week’s bulletin for Van graphics.)
The Food Pyramid most of us grew up with has been replaced by The Plate. Some tips and guidelines to follow as you choose MyPlate ...
Drink plenty of liquid- water is best, limit sugary beverages including drinks with artificial sweeteners, avoid sodas and fluids with sodium. Choose low fat milk and yogurt, but no more than 2 servings daily.
Make eating a social event. Avoid eating in front of the TV and choose to be with someone at meals.
Plan healthy meals. Anticipate what you'll need for The Plate and grocery shop accordingly.
Know how much to eat. Portion control is essential in choosing a healthy diet.
Vary your fruits and vegetables. Fresh and in season is advised, avoid canned veggies to control sodium intake and canned fruit with added sugars.
Use herbs and spices. Explore cooking with fresh herbs and organic spices. Ginger, turmeric, cilantro, oregano, rosemary, cinnamon, and thyme have health benefits. Check out The Healthiest Herbs and Spices at huffingtonpost.com
Read the Nutrition Facts label to avoid sugars, sodium, preservatives, and high calories.
Ask your health care provider about vitamins and supplements. Food nutrients are best, but based on individual dietary intake and physiological status you may need to supplement your diet.
Keep food safe. Food borne illnesses can be dangerous therefore follow safe food handling principles. Avoid unpasteurized foods, undercooked, and raw meats and seafoods.
