Morning Star Rotary Club welcomed Mary Toulouse to our June 11th meeting. Mary is a Lafayette College language professor, Director of the Language Resource Center, and President of the Mount Airy Neighborhood Association in West Bethlehem. She spoke to our members about the Bethlehem Rose Garden Farmers' Market and this week's Rose Fest 2026.
Mary discussed how she and a colleague started the market in a vacant lot in 2015, which has since grown to serve approximately 800-1000 people weekly with 20 regular vendors and various community events. She explained the restoration of the historic Rose Garden using a $15,000 grant from Lehigh County and the hiring of Stephen Scanniello, Chief Rosarian from the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, to redesign the garden. The presentation covered the market's evolution from a simple farmers market to a community gathering space with music, educational activities, and seasonal events, while highlighting ongoing challenges with funding the Rose Garden maintenance and vendor relationships.
