Stories
Our own Lynn Milet regaled us with ‘The Life & Times of Lynn Milet – My Journey to Rotary’.
Her sponsor, Ginny Wolkoff, and loooonnnggggg time friend introduced Lynn as the key person in their neighborhood having the respect of all the children and the dogs! Lynn grew up in Bridgeport Connecticut, where her father was a dentist and very avid golfer.  Among her many activities she became quite a golfer at a very young age, learning from her dad and Julius Booros, a close friend her father sponsored (as well as his dentist). Unfortunately, this was a time when young girls in golf were frowned-upon.  Lynn focused on academics and became very active in the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization.  At 16 she was representing the organization all over Connecticut making speeches to youth and adults, often 3,000 to 6,000 people audiences. Her love for learning really blossomed as she went on to earn numerous college masters degrees and a PhD in Education.  Going outside of education for fun, her latest achievement was completion of the culinary school at Northampton Community College. This led to ‘About Thyme LLC’, providing Personal Chef Services and Cooking Classes. aboutthymechef.com. Another in her long list of successes! Truly a Renaissance Woman! For those not able to attend, you missed some awesome cookies!

Past President Sue Burnett was proud to introduce two very special guests – Mary Jane Tigert, her mother, and Douglas Tigert, her father, and a fellow Rotarian!

REMINDERS:
Please turn in any remaining Spaghetti Dinner ticket sales money to Val Walk or Sue Reeps immediately so that we can close out the event reconciliation by June 30. If you have not yet done so, please remember ‘Is it Fair to all concerned?’

We have almost qualified Morning Star as a Rotary Foundation “Every Rotarian Every Year” Club!

All the members with whom Tom H or Tom K talked have pledged or donated. As of last Thursday, there was ONLY ONE member who we have not been able to contact – and we’ll keep trying. To fulfill your pledge, write your check to “The Rotary Foundation” and give it to Tom Hartzell or the “$2 a Week” Table (which can also accept one-time cash donations for Rotary Foundation). We are trying to finish this up now so that Tom H can assure proper credit to both you and the club for our EREY achievement.

This week’s program on June 18 will feature Joyce Marin, presently serves as the Executive Director of RenewLV, the smart growth, regional cooperation non-profit.

RenewLV was involved in the public engagement process for the Envision Lehigh Valley initiative which engaged over 12,000 individuals.  Her talk will focus on this program.

NEW GOLF DATE:  Due to the inclement weather on June 1, our Joint Golf Tournament to benefit the Bridges Foundation will be conducted on June 22. Please see story below.

SEE RESPONSIBILITIES, SPEAKERS & EVENTS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BULLETIN!
The current week’s meeting duties (or “Responsibilities”) have a section of their own in the weekly bulletin now. Along with Speakers and Events, they are shown in a column along the side of the page. These items are also shown in side columns at www.morningstarrotary.org. In addition, future duties sign-ups are available in the Downloads section of the website. If you are signed up for this week, there is also a note at the end of your bulletin.

Let’s continue to “Light Up Rotary.”
President Elect Ron

The Kolepp Family made it back safe and sound from our two week trip to South Africa. Thanks to PE Ron, PP Jean, the Board and our membership for holding down the Rotary fort  while I went AWOL for this trip of a lifetime.

We have many stories and pictures of the people, scenery and wildlife that we encountered on the “Essential South Africa” tour. In this update, I want to focus on the “Rotary connections”:

  • While in Johannesburg, Retief Van Der Lingen and his Dad Daniel “fetched us” from our hotel to their house in Randburg. Retief was an inbound Rotary exchange student two years ago hosted by Morning Star, specifically Kate and Larry Eighmy and the Kolepps. His mother Marguerite cooked a wonderful dinner for us. We caught up with Retief and learned more about his family, including younger brother Ruan.

  • While in Swaziland, our tour visited a pre-school for orphaned or disadvantaged toddlers with families impacted by HIV / AIDS. Advance knowledge of this stop enabled many tour members to bring school supplies . . . we brought Crayola crayons. Before arriving at the school, tour members shopped at a local market for staple foods to stock their lunch room. After we learned that the local Rotary Club is funding goats and an enclosure to improve project sustainability, our tour participants gathered a cash contribution to help finish the fence and buy more livestock.
  • At the end of our formal tour, the family staked their lives on my “left side of the road” driving skills. Luckily, we made the two hour drive from Johannesburg to Klerksdorp with no incidents!
  • In Klerksdorp, we were hosted to a grand dinner at the home of Anne and Hermann Botha. The Rotary Club of Orkney’s weekly meeting was cancelled due to their changeover dinner planned for the weekend, so the word went out that Carl was in town and many who knew Carl gathered at the Botha’s. The “braii-master” (American for “grille dude”) was Wally Jakobs. The Rotary hosts were Colin Hyman, President, and Dr. Tebogo Senyatsi, PE. The Bothas, Colin and wife Sharon, and Wally and wife Arlene had all been host parents to Carl. (Unfortunately, the Ackermans, his fourth host family, were away on vacation.) There was more meat than you can eat, plus “pop” – a maize dish – one of Carl’s favorite treats. Hermann shared South African wine from his extensive selection and Anne arranged for very tasty desserts. I exchanged our new Morning Star Rotary banner with Colin and received one of their last “50th Anniversary” editions. It was sweet sorrow to have to leave these Rotary friends, but we hope to cross paths with them again someday.
  • We took a side trip to Jaap and Kim Steyn’s farm in Viljoenskroon, a maize and cattle farming town located in the Free State province. Some of you may recall Jaap as the leader of the Group Study Exchange Team that MSR hosted in 2007. (Jaap was DG of District 9370 during Carl’s exchange year and he is currently President of the Rotary Club of Viljoenstroon.) Jaap prepared steaks over a fire made from dried corn cobs and they were fantastic. Jaap also made pop with tomato sauce and we better understand why Carl enjoys this traditional South African dish so much. Kim joined us for lunch from her retail manager job in town. After lunch, Jaap took us on a tour of his 600 hectare (~1,500 acre) farm operation. His staff was harvesting corn and his cattle were feeding in the newly harvested fields. We saw the newborn calves, the harvested sunflower and soy bean fields and his ostrich. Jaap then took us to the town’s grain mill and the peanut processing mill to see how the raw farm output is processed. We also drove through the local township, saw projects supported by Rotary, and said goodbye to Kim in town. We concluded back in Jaap’s garage where he showed us a dozen or so shipping boxes filled with Tom’s Shoes that the Rotary Club of Viljoenstroon will soon be distributing to school children in the township. Overall, a truly amazing day!

Just a one bit of Board business  – Don’t forget our Annual Joint Meeting of current and newly elected  Board members at 6 PM tomorrow night at Rosanna’s (at the corner of Broad and New Streets in Bethlehem).

I look forward to seeing everyone on June 18 for our weekly meeting, program and some “Red Badge to Blue Badge” graduations.

Let's continue to "Light Up Rotary".
Regards. President Tom

Please join us as we thank President Tom Kolepp for a great year … and kick him out of office!

When:  Saturday, June 20 from 5 to 8 PM

Where:  1006 Prospect Ave, Bethlehem
Many thanks to Tom & Landa Mohr for hosting!

Cost:  None!

Ages:  Under 2, or 21+, except for our exchange student Annika.
(Not a kids’ party, but “babies” are welcome.)

The club will provide burgers & brats (with rolls, condiments etc.), paper goods, water & soda, wine & beer, plus dessert.

Please bring an appetizer or side dish to share. Please do NOT bring dessert, which the club has covered … unless you make a great fruit salad.

So that we can estimate the amount of food and beverage needed, would you please sign up at the meeting this week, or email tnymohr@gmail.com ?

We hope to see you there!

Due to a weather postponement of the Golf Tournament, the Committee is still accepting raffle board donations, including gift certificates, and volunteers. Thanks to those who already signed up to sponsor and/or golf. And if you can now golf because of the new date, June 22, please contact Butch ASAP!

The raffle board has available squares to purchase for $5 per square - a great way for non-golfers to support this fundraiser. Proceeds benefit Bridges Foundation, which provides scholarships and financial assistance for Vocational Technical students to advance their education or get started in business.

At our changeover celebration on June 25 at Moravian Village, we will “pass the gavel” through all the Past Presidents in attendance to incoming President Ron Searfoss.
Our annual club changeover has evolved into a fun “reunion” meeting. Please invite other Morning Star “alumni” members plus family, friends, and maybe even a prospective member!

  2 ... 7+ ... 60-100 ... 7 ... 20 ... 1500 ... 1:2 ... 2.7

  • 2 ... Hours of TV you can safely watch per day. Too much tube time increases the concentration of triglycerides in your blood and lowers HDL "good" cholesterol which can harm your heart.
  • 7+ ...  Ideal daily servings of fruits and veggies.  That's more than the five a day you're used to, but extra can reduce your risk of early death by 42%.
  • 60-100 ... Heartbeats per minute at rest.  A gain of just 10 beats per minute over normal increases your risk of dying from heart disease by 10 to 18 %.
  • 7 ... Hours of sleep per night you need to control weight.  In a study of over 21,000 healthy adults, those who slept five or fewer hours per night were 50% more likely to become obese, compared with those who recorded a full night's rest.
  • 20: The most miles you should commute each day.  Longer commutes are associated with higher blood pressure, more worrying and chronic stress.
  • 1500:  Maximum amount of sodium, in milligrams an average adult should consume daily.  Three-quarters of the salt in your diet comes from processed foods, substitute fresh whole foods to lower blood pressure.
  • 1:2 ... healthiest ratio, waist to height.  A larger waist increases your risk of developing metabolic syndrome which in turn raises the chance of heart disease and stroke.
  • 2.7 ... days you should stay home with the flu.  Anything less and you risk infecting coworkers. Sixty % of workers go to the office when they are sick.
AND don't forget to drink your water!
