MSR GROCERY STORE GIFT CARD UPDATE
We extend sincere thanks to all who have generously donated in support of our Grocery Gift Card project!

With widespread support, we raised $7,000!!!

So far President Mike has purchased Gift Cards ($50 denominations) from 3 local Grocery Stores for distribution to families in need: Giant $3,500, CTown Supermarkets $1,500 and Valley Farm Market $1,500. Valley Farm Markets kicked in an extra 5%! Another $500 in Gift Cards will be purchased.

The COVID-19 pandemic has financially hurt so many people in our community. Bethlehem Area School District school principals and the Boys & Girls Club are helping identify those most in need.

This project is wrapping up, and Morning Star Rotary is looking into additional ways to help those impacted by the pandemic.

2020 OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION
May and June are traditionally the months that our club encourages all members to make a contribution to Rotary Foundation.  As with most activities in our life, this year is different.  Many members made recent contributions to the food drive, and we may be called upon to help financially with other needs in the community resulting from the current pandemic.

If you have not made a contribution during the current Rotary year (July 2019-current), we still encourage you to make a contribution to Rotary Foundation prior to June 30.

You can make a contribution on-line, through a regular deduction from a bank account, or by sending a check payable to “Rotary Foundation” to Tom Hartzell

Monies contributed through the $2/week program through March are being sent on to Rotary Foundation.

Contributions made during this Rotary year will be used to distribute grants to our District in three years.  A large grant received from the District this year enabled our club to help fund a backup generator at Victory House.

Checks payable to Rotary Foundation can be sent to Tom Hartzell, 1341 Biafore Avenue, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

Any questions, please refer to Tom Hartzell (thartzell@hmk-ins.com).

Thank you for your support and all you do for Rotary.
June 25 MSR Outdoor Combo Kick-Out Party and Club Changeover
MSR is tentatively planning a combo kickout party/changeover meeting outdoors to recognize Mike Long’s leadership and club accomplishments for the Rotary year, welcome incoming President John Oesmann and new board members, and celebrate seeing our wonderful Rotary friends in person!

Maybe we’ll “toss the gavel” along Past Presidents, with a disinfecting wipe between each?

We will socially distance, and the event is still subject to such a gathering being allowed in Northampton county at that time.

Thursday June 25, 2020 from 5:30 PM to ???
(Replaces the morning meeting that day.)

BASD Education Center parking lot – keeping at least 6 feet distant!
1516 Sycamore Street, Bethlehem, PA 18017

BYO food & beverage (and designated driver, if applicable …)

Music is planned, radio/boom box or similar source.

Fingers crossed that we’ll see you then!
MAY 14 PROGRAM DR. KESTER

We were fortunate to have Dr. Kent Kester, MD, FACP, FIDSA, FASTMH; Vice President and Head, Translational Sciences and Biomarkers, Sanofi Pasteur, Swiftwater, PA as our speaker last Thursday..

Dr.Kester is an Infectious Disease clinician-scientist with a long history of activities in infectious diseases and public health research, development, and response. During his 25-year career in the U.S. Army, he held a variety of research assignments at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.  Some of the major highlights:

Vaccinations save over 3 million lives each year globally including people of all ages.

Most important areas of focus are vaccinations development and clean water.

Influenza causes 250 to 500 thousand deaths each year with over 60 thousand in the United States.

New vaccines are guided by safety and effectiveness. They require thousands of trials for approval which can take 15 - 20 years. Costs of this process are normally in the $500 million to $1 billion range.

Currently there are 76 projects worldwide focused on COVID. Ultimate success will require global cooperation.

Special thanks to  Dr. Kester his presentation, discussion and insights.
