PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear MSR Rotarians:

Here are things to know from this week:
  • Club Action Plan: The November 11 board meeting at 5:30 pm on Zoom is open to every member. Jennifer will send pre-reads and lead a brainstorm on club goals, fundraisers, and leadership for the next couple of years.
  • Salute the Troops tickets: If you don't sell your 6 tickets, please buy them yourself and give them away - filling the 600-person auditorium is as much of a goal as fundraising!
  • Holiday Hope Chests: Please join the Easton, Nazareth, Bhem and MSR Clubs on Saturday, November 21, 9 am to noon in Easton (address to follow). We will buy supplies and gifts for kids and fill and wrap the boxes. Bring gifts, wrapping paper, tissue paper, and shoe boxes. Last year the program filled about 5,000 of nearly 8,000 requests!
  • Bell ringing: Saturday, December 12, at the Christkindlmarkt. Sign up with Jean Searfoss - costumes and dogs are welcome, anything to attract coins and bills!
  • Women of Excellence Christmas for Kids: Enid is also collecting new toys, gifts, sneakers, and clothing for ages 0 to 15, with the greatest need for ages 13 to 15. Visa gift cards, gift wrap, and volunteers are also needed. Wrapped gifts must be labeled with age and gender. Last year the event served 1,000 kids and 450 families.
  • Grant review: 5 volunteers are needed to review applications from the end of November through December. See Betty if you'd like to help select our recipient
  • Youth exchange: There is no outbound student yet for next year, and the application deadline is mid November. Please spread the word!
  • Youth programs: Thank you thank you again to Leah, Bruce, Cheryl, Bill, and Susan Badu who have taken over youth programs. If you're interested please see Jennifer
  • Membership: Members will be asked for a short testimonial, possibly on video, on why they joined and why they stay, to share on social media.
5K: The preliminary estimate is about $6,000, with the last sponsors and expenses still being compiled.
  • Recognition: Wendy Ellsworth was in person! Tom H gave her a Paul Harris Fellow recognition plus 8 for her support of the Foundation and her leadership on the Kenya projects.

THANK YOU!
Jennifer

THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER
HISTORY OF CRAYOLA

At our October 15, 2026 gathering, Alyssa Sarnosky, Community and Employee Engagement Specialist and Company Historian at Crayola, took us through the company’s "colorful" history. Crayola grew out of an 1885 pigment and chemical business run by Edwin Binney and his cousin C. Harold Smith. It moved to Easton for the Bushkill Creek water power and the nearby slate belt. Binney’s wife Alice, a teacher, named it in 1903 from the French “craie” (chalk) and “oleaginous” (oily). Alyssa covered the 64-count box with the built-in sharpener in 1958, Hallmark’s purchase in 1984, and the 1996 Easton attraction that is now the Crayola Experience. She also talked about the solar farm that provides the energy that produces about a third of the 3 billion crayons made each year, and the Easton plant that sends no waste to landfill. She added that Silly Putty, paints, and clays are made in Bethlehem! Crayola makes 13 million crayons a day, holds 302 patents, and has about 1,200 employees who give about 15,000 volunteer hours a year.

Crayola is also a generous community partner through Crayola grants: Applications are open until December 31 for $500 to $10,000, focused on youth arts and education, and all funding stays in the Lehigh Valley.

PAUL HARRIS FELLOW

At our October 15, 2026 meeting, MSR Foundation Chair Tom Hartzell presented MSR Rotarian Wendy Ellsworth with her Paul Harris +8 pin recognizing her ongoing support of the Rotary Foundation.  Congratulations and thank you Wendy!  Thank you to all MSR Rotarians who have contributed this Rotary year.
