IMPORTANT NOTICE!
2024 CHANGEOVER/KICKOUT PARTY
On Saturday, June 22, 2024 MSR held its annual Changeover/Kickout Party honoring our outgoing President, Betty Isaac and installing incoming President, Rodney Conn and the Board of Directors for 2024-2025.  A fantastic time was had by everyone.  A big MSR thank you to PP Shawn & Bob Bariana for hosting the party at their beautiful home and DG Diane Donaher for taking part in the festivities.  Congratulations President Betty on your service to the club this past year and best wishes to incoming President Rodney.

UPCOMING SPEAKER
2024-2025 MSR DUES
On May 30, club Secretary Val Walk emailed Dues Notice for the 2024-25 Rotary year to all active members. (Rotary’s year runs from July 1 to June 30.) Many thanks to members who have already paid, via check or PayPal!

Please note that, in the process of preparing the 2024-2025 Budget, the Board approved a dues increase to $250.00. While Rotary International dues and District dues have been increasing for many years, Morning Star Rotary dues have remained constant for over 10 years.  This was not a decision made lightly by the Board, but a necessary one.

You have the option of paying for the full Rotary year (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025) or for a half-year (July 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024.)

Instructions for submitting your payment ($250 or $125) were included on the invoice.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact club Treasurer Jean Searfoss jsearfoss@cementemployers.com, or any club officer.

Thank you in advance for submitting your payment prior to the due date of June 30, 2024.

ANTIGUA LITERACY PROJECT

When Rotarians in the Antigua Sundown Club became aware that kindergarteners learning to read needed a boost in their phonics development, they called their long-time partners at Lehigh University to see what could be done to help. Lehigh staff member and Bethlehem Morning Star Rotarian Bill Hunter, who has taken his students on a dozen service trips to Antigua & Barbuda, was referred through Rotary connections to Dr. Debbie Matz, an experienced reading specialist.

Through a financial collaboration between both Rotary clubs, Dr. Matz traveled to Antigua with the Lehigh group in 2022 to begin a pilot program by making classroom observations, engaging in inquiring conversations with teachers and principals, and facilitating a professional development session at one of the targeted primary schools. A need for additional instruction in phonemic awareness was determined and an appropriate and affordable supplemental curriculum was selected for kindergarten reading instruction. Following a successful first run, both Rotary clubs again sponsored Dr. Matz’s travel to Antigua in May to expand the reach of the pilot program by training Kindergarten teachers and principals in foundational early literacy skills and the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness program at two of the targeted primary schools.
