President’s Message for May 14, 2015 Meeting
The Cancer Support Community was the program topic for our May 7 meeting.
We were joined by Paula Ream, Executive Director, and Jen Sinclair, Program Director. After Paula’s overview of the organization, Jen provided the specifics on the Kid Support program that was funded by a Morning Star Rotary’s Community Development Grant. During the eight-week Kid Support series, attendees met other families who are facing cancer together; this helps children and teens (ages 4 – 17) learn ways to cope with stress and express their emotions through art and play. If you want to learn more about the Cancer Support Community, please see their website at cancersupportglv.org.
In addition to our speakers, we had two other meeting guests:
- Matt Berry visited the club for the second week in a row with Dee Elliott.
- Anders Heiney was the guest of Janet Sipple. He is a prospective member for 2037.
Our annual MSR Spaghetti Dinner is not officially over until all members’ ticket money is turned in to Val Walk or Sue Reeps. Please help us to finish our event reconciliation by getting your money in asap.
This Saturday morning is our annual District 7430 Training Assembly. The registration date has passed, but if you really want to go, see the registration form on the District website and call the registrar to see if they are still accepting registrations. There are ride share seats remaining; see the signup list on Thursday morning.
The Golf Tournament Committee
is in immediate need of hole (& other) sponsors by May 21 and golfers by May 27, plus raffle board donations, including gift certificates, and volunteers. The raffle board has available squares to purchase for $5 per square - a great way for non-golfers to support this event!
In May, the Foundation Committee is soliciting everyone’s Rotary Foundation contributions to qualify Morning Star as an “Every Rotarian Every Year” (EREY) Club. If you have not already given, please get your Foundation contribution into Tom Hartzell by May 21 so that he can assure proper credit to both you and the club for our “Every Member Every Year” achievement. If you are not a “$2 a Week” participant or have not already contributed otherwise for 2014-15, then the Foundation Committee will be contacting you. (Note: One-time donations may be made at the $2 a Week area at meeting sign-in.)
Join Janet Sipple and Mike Long, May’s “Prospective Member Challenge” volunteers, and make the commitment to introduce one or two acquaintances to Rotary and share our “Service Above Self” ideals. Guests are always welcome.
This week’s program (May 14) features Todd Heft’s Classification Talk
about his life and career in marketing. President Elect Ron will be wielding the gavel this week as President Tom as been called away on business. On May 21, Dee Elliott and a panel she is assembling will be speaking about “Collective Impact”.
