End of Year Letter to ARC Members
Dear Club Members,

Since this is the last edition of SMILE for 2017 and since I am halfway though my term as President, I want to take this opportunity to give you an update on our Club's progress this year and on the goals that we are setting for the first 6 months of 2018.  Accomplishments (in no particular order):
  1. The dedication of the Rotary Foundation was held on October 13th after several years of planning and work led by our 3 previous ARC Presidents and our fantastic Fountain committee leaders and members.  Rotary now has a permanent memorial/monument to over 100 years of Rotary contributions to Allentown and the Lehigh Valley.
  2. We purchased and partially implemented the ClubRunner system.  It provides us with: member directory services;  events calendar which appears in the right column of this newsletter and can be bookmarked on your PC using this link; and a newsletter tool, which has greatly improved club communications and, I feel, helps to bring us closer together as ARC members.  ClubRunner also has a website which integrates with Smile articles and our event calendar - updating this is a 2018 project and tools to help with member recruiting.  More about ClubRunner benefits and a demo are scheduled for our Friday, March 9th meeting.
  3.  An Executive Committee was formed to focus on strategic planning for the Club and to provide stronger, more prepared Board succession and presidential leadership for years to come.  My sincere thanks to Marci and Don for their dedication, involvement and contributions.

Three goals for the second half of my term are:
  1.  to increase club membership back to the level it was at when I became President.  As you can see from the graph below, membership has been a net zero since July 1 - additions offset by departures.   The Membership Committee is working diligently and creatively on special events for 2018 but the committee can't recruit members on its own - everyone has to help.  I urge every member to bring at least one guest to a meeting or Club activity in the next 6 months and/or forward the Smile to a friend or Colleague who you think would be a good addition to ARC.  Simple actions like this will help to introduce more people to our mission and goals and be a first step towards membership.  A new membership category that we're planning to offer is the "Spouse Membership" - stay tuned for details!

"I participate in the Paul Harris Society because I care. These contributions demonstrate our commitment to serve others."

Paul Harris Society Coordinator for District 5450 (Colorado, USA)

This Society is an opportunity to put our Rotary dollars to work not just locally, but internationally.  My goal is to incorporate Paul Harris Society facts and announcements into more of our meetings to increase our participation in the important work of this international charitable organization.

3.  To complete our new Strategic Plan before April 1st with a focus on the following items:  membership, participation, charitable endeavors and community action.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes to Everyone for a Healthy New Year full of love, family and all the good things life has to offer! - Barb

Marci and I will be at Bell Hall Thursday night at 5 for our Ho, Ho Ho Happy Hour - hope you'll join us!  Maybe Santa or some elves will be there too?

Marci, Don, Jamie or Chris will be leading our January meetings while I am away - see you in February if not tomorrow night!

Holiday Party, Friday, Jan 12th
We will be having a post holiday party at Nostos Greek Restaurant in Allentown on Friday, Jan 12th at 6:30 pm.  The price per person, including gratuity (18%) will be about $34 per person.  We need a minimum of 25 guests for the evening, although Nostos can accommodate more.  Reservations can be made by clicking here to email Barb Bigelow.

Menu:  There will be a combo of 5 cold appetizers that are served with pita wedges

Rotarians choose from one of the following entrees:

  • Veggie Moussaka: baked layers of potatoes, eggplants and zucchini topped with a béchamel sauce
  • Broiled Cod: served with choice of potato or vegetable
  • Chicken Saganaki: sautéed chicken with ouzo, scallions, peppers, garlic, fresh tomato, basil and feta cheese, served with rice

Zion Church History and Tour

From its founding in 1762 to today Zion’s Reformed UCC Church has witnessed many changes.  Rev Bob Stevens and Lehigh Valley Historian Frank Whelan combined for an interesting and informative presentation and tour last week.   If you didn't take the tour and there's enough interest, maybe Rev. Bob can arrange another post meeting tour in 2018?  We had a large turnout, but for those of you who might have missed it, here's the text of the talk and some more photos.

ZION’S CHURCH PAST AND PRESENT
By Frank Whelan

If Zion’s Church seems like it has been here forever it almost has. In Lehigh Valley history terms and particularly in Allentown terms its roots are deep. It was in 1762 that William Allen donated land on the east side of Church Alley. Now Church Street. most probably located in the rear of the lot occupied by the parking garage. The space on which the church occupies today was apparently planned for a cemetery but was never used as one.
