Congratulations to the Membership Committee

Wow, what a great turnout for our first mixer of 2018 held last Thursday night at the Butz Company office in downtown Allentown.  We had 34 people attend, including 17 Rotarians and 17 prospective members.  Special thanks to Wendy Body, Steve Butz and Sally Corvino, all from Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and to John Hannis for his great Rotary introduction and testimonial.

Those who attended had a great time and enjoyed the Butz Company's hospitality.  Project Engineer Steven Butz delivered an effective and informative presentation to The Rotary Club of Allentown, Pennsylvania on the Butz construction management approach and how they incorporate technology into projects.  Below are several photos of the event!

Please plan to join us next month AND extend an invitation to a prospective member to join you for our networking and happy hour Thursday, February 15th, 5:30 - 7 pm . We'll gather at Rolf Schalke's Applied Separations office, 930 Hamilton St #4.  It's sure to be an fun and informative evening!  Bet Rolf is planning some surprises for us!

The Iron Pigs are in the House!

Kurt Landes, the first and only General Manager in franchise history, will speak to us this Friday - his focus will be on how the Iron Pigs have been blessed to have a very successful first 10 years and what to look forward in the next 10 years!

Kurt has helped steer the IronPigs to extraordinary success under his leadership. The club has led all of Minor League Baseball in average attendance per game since their debut season in 2008 and was honored with the prestigious Bob Freitas award in 2012, honoring sustained excellence in Minor League Baseball.

Under Landes' watch, the IronPigs have led Minor League Baseball in average attendance over their 10-year history. Since 2008, the IronPigs have consistently averaged well over 9,000 fans per game - a number that drastically exceeds Coca-Cola Park's fixed seating capacity of 8,089.  Landes served an essential role in bringing both the 2013 Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game and the 2010 Triple-A All-Star Game to Coca-Cola Park as the IronPigs became the first team to have hosted both of Triple-A Baseball's marquee events.

Wonderful Fruit - Subarashi Kudamono
Who imagined, a program on pears in the middle of January would be so interesting?  Holly Harder, director of marketing for Subarashi (translated to "Wonderful Fruit)  grown at a working farm in Kempton, gave a fascinating presentation.

There are 20 varities of this fruit, now being farmed in the Kempton area.  The farm itself has been in production for over 30 years, begun by Joel Spira (of Lutron fame!), who liked and loved this pear on a trip to Asia.  However, he found out he could not buy Asian pears in the US---so started growing them on his own.  It is a real commitment to the Spira vision, because Holly reminded us that "farming is a way of life". And the world market for Asian pears continues to grow.  She noted that they ship particularly well.
The new varieties have really been designed for the Asian market, including an Asian pear wine.  Holly concluded her talk by passing samples to the assembled gathering.

Chris Bauder introduced Holly's presentation, Don Wieand was chair of the day, and Marcy Schick made timely announcements.  Reminder:  a wonderful pear (the English translation) Asian pear wine tasting event is coming soon to Kutztown Rotary.  Where can you buy them in the Lehigh Valley?  Holly said currently only at Whole Foods and Wegmans.  But you can also order customized Asian pear gift boxes with a mix of varieties from the company's website, wonderfulfruit.com, but the supply is limited.  Try one, they taste super.
