Reflections of a Club President

It has truly been a great year!  Thanks to a supportive board and engaged club members, we’ve accomplished so much, completing numerous service projects, hosting great speakers, incorporating the Honorary level as a membership category, conducting a highly successful membership drive.  We are about to hold a prosperous golf tournament with the proceeds funding next year’s grant program and student scholarships.  Throughout this year, I’ve strengthened my leadership skills, deepened my dedication to the club, and, I hope, demonstrated my commitment to serving others.

While all these achievements have been meaningful, my favorite takeaway was learning how to create what I call an “instant program,”-something to rely on when a scheduled speaker must cancel at the last minute.  On three occasions we turned those moments into opportunities for connection.  I stated a topic.  Club members spoke about what we were thankful for when a November snowstorm cancelled our Students of the Month.  Another time we heard favorite family tales, and most recently, reflections on how we came to York.  (This last topic need’s part 2 which is scheduled for June 22^nd.)  

I’ve had the privilege of hearing so many great stories-Joanne Bankos shared how to prepare a stress free Thanksgiving meal, Blair Ansel recounted how he met his wife, and Lisa Striffler as a child on vacation learned that money left on the restaurant table wasn’t to be picked up (her dad turned the car around to return it to the waitress). 

I truly believe Rotary Club of York-East exists to make a positive impact in the community.  Serving as president of a service organization is a rewarding experience that goes far beyond holding a title.  While the title suggests authority, the true role lies in service, collaboration and inspiring members toward a common goal. 

As my year ends, it has been both an honor and a privilege to lead our group.  Together, we make a difference in our community.  I hope I’ve served you well.
