Congratulations Honorary Members, Roger Dick and Jim Walters
Two members of our club were honored at our September 16th meeting. What made them special? Let me count the ways.
Roger Dick made the difficult decision to resign from our club earlier this year. He felt he couldn’t participate at the level he was accustomed due to illness. During Roger’s 33 years of Rotary membership, he was President of the Cortland Breakfast Club (1992-93) and York-East (2002-03). His past York-East involvement includes Club Foundation Chair, Club Service, International Missions Coordinator, and Membership Chair. In fact, Roger is the reason I am a member of this club. I was invited to be a speaker in 2014. It was Roger who approached and asked me if I ever thought of joining Rotary. As they say, the rest is history!
According to Bob and Friedel Elser, Roger resigned due to serious health issues, feeling that he simply could not give his all anymore. Yet his heart will always be that of a true, dedicated, exemplary Rotarian, having been a mentor, friend and counselor to many successful new members as well as his fellow Rotarians who are his and Vicky’s friends for life.
Jim Walters is leaving the area as he and Winnie are relocating to a retirement community in Lancaster County. Most of our members do not realize all Jim has contributed to this club during his 38 years. He was our fifth club president (1992-93) and then again in 2010-11. He was part of the Planning Committee for a fundraising picnic held at fellow member, Brad Holleran’s Meadowbrook restaurant where Peck Carvil’s country band played. Jim served on the Classification committee, Club Service Committee and most recently was our Club Foundation Chair for 10-12 years, plus many other positions.
His family hosted 3 Rotary Exchange Students Opie (Netherlands), Manuel (Spain) and Noelia (Madrid). It is no wonder that their daughter, Sara Jayne trekked to Madrid as an exchange student. Jim stated, “I can’t remember a time when I was “just a member”. Rotary is about involvement, and I was!
Roger and Jim are now Honorary members of York-East which means they are entitled to attend meetings and enjoy all privileges in the club without being a Rotarian’s guest. Congratulations to you both!
