Since my retirement, I've had the pleasure to spend an extended amount of time after the holidays in Holden Beach, North Carlolina. With our recent cold snap, I was looking forward to some warmer temperatures. That area is typically ten degrees warmer. Many days the daytime high is high 50 or low 60's while the evenings are low 30 to low 40's. Very exciting considering we just had 11 inches of snow fall the previous weekend.
Arriving last Wednesday, I found all I needed was an insulated vest when venturing outside. Sadly, I realized I had to break out my warmest winter coat Saturday morning as the temperatures plummeted to daytime temps below freezing and evening temps in the teens. In addition, southeastern North Carolina had its biggest snowstorm since 1989 on Saturday evening! The weather person forecast blizzard conditions. By Sunday morning I woke up to seven inches of snow on the beach with high winds. Everyone was stuck at home as Holden Beach doesn't have plows. Guess you can say the weather was my unwanted passenger and followed me down I95!
Even though I'm 500 miles away, you'll still see me at our weekly meetings. My plan is to be there virtually every Tuesday that I'm able. I like our Zoom option so I can keep in touch and hear our programs. I invite you to join me on Zoom so you too can keep in touch.

Matt will tell us how AFL works to help students by utilizing athletic training, academic support, life skills development, and mental health resources to help prepare students for life long success.
They currently serve 135 individuals ranging from grade 3 through college and while they primarily support boys, they are planning to expand and introduce female-centric programs in the future. Many kids are able to get into college as a result of the program.

The organiziation uses therapeutically applied gaming to work with infividuals with autism. The mission is to connect individuals on the autism spectrum with opportunities in the gaming and comic book communities. We focus on three main pillers: helping autistic people feel safe, wanted, and successful. These pillars allow us to foster incllusion, creativity and community for neurodivergent individuals.

Bernadette Lauer “School of Rock”
School of Rock York offers a hands-on, performance-focused music education that combines private instruction with group rehearsals to help students develop musical skills and confidence through real live performances. They provide a variety of programs—including Little Wing (ages 4-5), Rookies, Rock 101, Performance Program, songwriting, and adult ensembles—designed to take students from beginner to stage-ready musicians. The school emphasizes building teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence, with many students performing at local venues and participating in camps and workshops.

With the month of February here, we have the opportunity to celebrate Rotary’s birthday. It was 121 years ago on February 23rd that our Founder Paul Harris convened the first Rotary meeting in Chicago, Illinois, to unite professionals with diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Today our organization includes members dedicated to humanitarian service in over 36,000 clubs and over 200 countries and geographic areas around the world. Together, let’s all invite others to join us in fellowship and service so that we continue to make a difference for many years to come.
February is also very special as it is Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month. Peace is one of our seven areas of focus and as a humanitarian organization peace is a cornerstone of our mission. We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect. By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, our members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources
February is Chocolate Month!
Double Chocolate Chip Cookies
Ingredients:
1 ¼ cups flour
½ cup cocoa powder
¾ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
¾ cup butter
½ cup sugar
½ cup brown sugar
2 large eggs (room temperature)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350
In a medium bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until combined. Set aside.
In a large bowl, add the butter and both sugars. Mix with a fork or whisk until just combined. You can also do this in a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. Add the egg and vanilla to the butter mixture and continue to mix until fully combined.
Dump the flour mixture into the butter mixture. Use a rubber spatula to fold the mixture until a smooth dough forms. If you are using a stand mixer, mix on low speed until just combined.
Add chocolate chips and mix until evenly distributed in dough mix.
