50 Nonprofit Organizations in Search of Volunteers
The Leadership Harrisburg Area Virtual Volunteer Fair allows area residents an opportunity to browse booths of nonprofit organizations in one virtual space. Local organizations are invited to attend this fair in order to raise public awareness of your nonprofit and mission. The volunteer fair provides all potential volunteers an opportunity to explore the various nonprofits in our region and connect with those in which they are most interested.
We are excited to be your guides as we set out exploring new opportunities together. Our path will take us into a world of leadership, learning, fellowship and fun! All from the comfort of your own home!
This exciting adventure will also include the opportunity to join with fellow Rotarians safely in service throughout the three districts!
We note with great sadness the death of former club member and past president Charles Clevenger, who passed away Monday, April 12, 2021 following a six-year battle with brain cancer.
A celebration of his life will be held at his home in Carlisle, PA this summer.
His passing is a significant loss to the community.

“I see trees of green, red roses too. I see them bloom, for me and you, And I think to myself what a wonderful world.” What, what am I doing? Of course, I am singing with Louis Armstrong What A Wonderful World. What? You want me to record the minutes of today’s Rotary Club of Harrisburg meeting? Okay, I can do that, but only if I can keep singing this song.
“I see skies of blue and clouds of white…” Indeed President James with his Monday meeting affable style greeted us with “Happy Zoom, Happy Monday and Good to see you all today!” Our Greeter, Joan Dickinson warmly welcome the many members joining the Zoom and The Bell rang at 12:01. “The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night…” Dynamic Doug Pieper offered a pitch-perfect invocation, our Club song was the irrepressible Louis singing Wonderful World and we pledged and 4-way tested. “And I think to myself what a wonderful world.”
President James hit five tone-perfect notes: today’s lunch donation to Hanna’s Pantry and YTD $30,400 donated supporting organizations ever-helpful with food these past months, the District Conference is coming and the first 25 members signing up are eligible for Club reimbursement of the $25 fee, the nominating committee provided the slate of officers for 2021-22 and annual meeting is May 17th, Corporate Members Rock and a reminder to please support the Rotary International Fund request with a minimum $100 donation.
“The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky, Are also on the faces of people going by…” Had to laugh a bit as Toni Marks noted we would host the 4-way test Essay winner another day as the student was tied up in class right now—priorities are straight! This scribe was given 3 minutes for a Meet the Board Member report. My hope is that the 24 pictures answered the questions of the roles I play with the leadership team, what I do in my spare time and when I am working, what I actually do. Maybe, just maybe one of these days you will see me on Jeopardy or visit with me at our lake retirement home. “I see friends shaking hands, Saying How do you do? They are really saying I love you.”
Toni Terrific Mark did introduce today’s speaker, Dr. Bilita Mattes, Provost and CAO of Harrisburg University and the opportunity to share how HU supports women in Stem. “I hear babies cry, I watch them grow. They’’ learn much more than I’ll ever know…” Dr. Mattes presented a thoughtful outline of what has been done the past ten years and why HU is doing this to support women with the “STEM up network.” It was eye-opening to see facts and the gaps that exist in providing gender equity and parity as our speaker noted women are simply underrepresented in STEM and that filling that void better will add a tremendous boost to our economy. Moreover, she provided that these efforts by HU are truly a business imperative as by 2024 there will be a need for 1.1 M computer jobs and only about 45 will be able to be filled. The good news is that the past ten years have shown these efforts work with 1000 active women engaged and the ability to extend and expand other organization programs. We were invited to join her team at Stemupnetworks.org.
“Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world, Oh Yeah! Meeting adjourned at 12:45 and keep planting those Rotary seeds my friends.
