Meeting Minutes
Rotary Club of Harrisburg
Monday, March 7, 2022

Submitted by Curt Stutzman

The Rotary Club of Harrisburg (#23 in the world) returned to the Hilton Harrisburg on Monday, March 7, 2022.  The meeting was called to order by President Matt Staub at 12:10 pm.  The invocation was given by Carolyn Dumaresq, and the pledge of allegiance was led by President Matt.  Following the pledge, Matt released the Rotarians to meet and greet each other for the first time in a long while.  Much engaging interaction followed.

Guests attending today were introduced by their hosts as follows:

  • Una Martone introduced Joe Robinson

  • Karen Paris introduced Nick DiFrancesca of the Dauphin Co. Library

  • Sue Ward-Diorio introduced Dave Carl and Jennifer Kern from Central PA Food Bank

  • Rick B. introduced Peter Megovlas from Members 1st FCU

Meet the Member presentation:

Rotarian Char Magaro shared her classification talk with the club.  Many know Char as the owner of Char’s at Tracy Mansion, and she has also been involved in many other businesses over the years in the community and in other areas.  Originally from Erie, PA, she has traveled internationally, living in the Himalayas for a few years early in her adult life.  Char has lived in the Central PA area for 48 years, and has a strong interest in environmental issues and serving the needs of the community.  She believes in visioning–if you can envision it, you can attain it.  It’s great to have you as a member, Char!

Peggy Grove  shared (as an honorary host) that the Heart Association of Harrisburg is again holding a gala on April 1.  See her if you have an interest in attending.

Toni Mark reported that our 4-Way Test Speech Contest winner has become one of the five finalists presenting at the District Conference in May.  Good luck!

Our next Service on a Monday is scheduled to be at the Humane Society of Harrisburg on March 21 in place of our noon meeting at the Hilton.  Space is limited, so please sign up on ClubRunner as soon as possible.

President Matt reported that the board has voted to donate $1,500 from unused meals costs to three different organizations ($500 each).  These are Downtown Daily Bread, Central PA Food Bank and the Rotary Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund, which will be directed to support Ukrainian refugees.

Rotarian Dr. Ski introduced our speaker for today, Members 1st FCU President and CEO George Nahodil.  Mr. Nahodil leads a financial institution with 500,000 members in Central PA.  He has worked in the NY banking industry, and has previously served as a teacher in New York state as well.  He serves on many boards in the region, and has received many well-deserved awards.

George shared about the local and national economy, and some details of the growth of Members’ 1st and their commitment to serving the community.  They are the second largest provider of mortgages in the state, provide car loans totaling $100 million monthly, and have $700 million in commercial loans.  During the pandemic, they were able to provide $186 million in PPP loans to area businesses.

He then spent some time comparing the dynamics of the 2020 and 2021 periods of the pandemic, and how that compares to what is currently happening and may happen in the future.  Following the disruption of the first two years of the COVID pandemic Members 1st has strong lending demand, while deposits remain flat as members begin to spend some of the money they have delayed spending during the pandemic.  He reports that Fed interest rates are rising, but the long term rates are still low, which affects the size of deposit rates by keeping them low as well.  Housing supply is low and demand is high, which has made sales prices rise significantly.  His prognosis for the future is that interest rates will increase due to inflationary pressures.  He believes the inflation rise is transitory, and will peak later this year and that supply chains will normalize over time.  In closing, he said that Central PA is a mecca and attractive to many as a place to live and work.  This bodes well for our future.

Mr. Nahodil responded to questions after speaking, and then signed the book on local geography for elementary students.

President Matt adjourned the meeting at 1:05 p.m.

Stories
Ice, Fire & Rotary!
The city of Harrisburg held their yearly Ice & Fire festival on Saturday March 5th and the Harrisburg Rotary Club was there to take in all of the festivities!
What a beautiful weather weekend for all to enjoy our beloved city.  Ginny Roth & Beth Mihmet had a fun time pushing children down the ice slide and Beth was happy to report that there were many smiles on their faces!
The downtown street festival featured not only the ice slide, but also fire dancers, live ice carving, fire pits, and performances by local school & community groups.  A special thanks to Beth & Ginny for representing the “23rd club in all the land” so proudly!   #RotaryClub23 continues to be proud of all the work we are doing to uplift our community!

Rotary Club of Harrisburg’s YCDT
Supports Mental Health Programs for Local Youth

Rotary International celebrated its 100th year of service in 2005.  That year RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar asked every Rotary club to mark the occasion in a distinct way.  The Rotary Club of Harrisburg (RCH) planning team chose to design the Youth Community Development Team as not just a one-year event but a commitment to serve youth and our community in perpetuity.

Seventeen years later RCH members serving as YCDT coaches and the 2022 student participants have taken the original concept to new heights and have incorporated innovative technologies.

RCH leaders are taking time to inspire 36 students from John Harris, SciTech, Central Dauphin and Bishop McDevitt High Schools in the areas of team building, assessing community needs, fundraising, grant writing/evaluation, public speaking, and volunteerism.  This year coaches and participants have been meeting at the Camp Curtin YMCA, as well as virtually.

RCH YCDT committee members include Marion Alexander, Meghan Bachmore, Gillian Byerly, Jennifer Doyle, Brad Gebhart (co-chair), Andy Phillips (co-chair), Jessica Ritchie and Jill Tenny.
While there are perceived and real outcomes of the YCDT program such as increased confidence in the participating students; transformed attitudes; broadened perspectives and new friendships plus increased understanding across cultural and socioeconomic boundaries, the specific objectives laid out by the Rotary Club of Harrisburg are to:

1) Increase students’ exposure to the greater Harrisburg community and their awareness of local resources.
2) Develop and improve students’ oral communication & presentation skills.
3) Increase students’ application of collaboration, negotiation, compromise, and persuasive skills.
4) Provide students with a forum to serve the community and demonstrate an impact.

These objectives of the YCDT program are achieved through a REAL experience.  Participants identify a specific area of community focus, raise money toward providing a solution to that need and select a community organization to receive the YCDT grant funding and participant community service hours.

This year’s YCDT members chose to dedicate efforts on mental health issues facing young people.  Request for proposals were written and send into the community with an astounding record of 22 returned requests.

On February 16, RCH coaches and the participants (via Zoom) discussed how to successfully prepare for the critical step of raising the $5,000.  RCH coaches with incredible credentials in fundraising included Gillian Byerly and Jessica Ritchie leading an hour-long session on peer-to-peer fundraising.  Content included having a personal plan, leveraging personal contacts, planning the pitch and learning how to make “the ask.”  Jennifer Doyle led a discussion on “What Makes A Good Grant Application.” The students broke into breakout groups and narrowed the 22 grant applicants to five finalists.

To spur competition, the participants are divided into teams.  This year’s six teams chose the names Forces L’invissible, Makin A Difference, Turtle League, Team Penguin and Crew Leaders.

The team also incorporated modern-day technology into their fundraising plan.  They will use an online donation platform, business cards with QR codes, Instagram and Tiktok to add new dimensions to raising the important funds needed to address the needs of the selected final request recipient.

The students will interview representatives from the five finalists and select a winning grant recipient on Wednesday, May 18.

RCH members are encouraged to make contributions to the YCDT by April 30, 2022
