Past District Governor and Past President Janice Black spoke to the club about the life and impact of Past President Robert Hanson. The Hanson Award is being given this year to Rotarian Wendell Hoover. Bob Hanson loved Rotary; he said it was his favorite organization. Bob wanted people in Rotary to grow into leadership and in their creative thinking and planning for Rotary. He started the Hanson lunch, which is an opportunity for those in leadership in the Rotary Club of Harrisburg to gather over a meal and share thoughts and ideas. Bob Hanson also agreed to the Hanson award, which is given to one Rotarian every year. Wendell Hoover meets all 4 of the requirements to qualify for the award. Janice presented a clock to Wendell, and he also will be given a stipend to use towards a trip to a Rotary International Conference.
Wendell Hoover thanked Rotarians, his personal assistant, and his coworkers who were present at the meeting. He thanked his parents, and his wife and children, who were present in the meeting. Wendell said that his parents modeled business ownership to him, as well as the importance of doing things behind the scene. He said he enjoys Rotary, because he is always greeted by positive, friendly people. He loves the topics that are discussed from the podium and thinks the topics are interesting, insightful and thought-provoking. Wendell has been involved in the dictionary project, Youth Exchange, yearly science award, and the Central Penn Food Bank. These are all activities he has enjoyed.
Wendell closed his speech saying “We are all called to give of our time, and also of our resources. We have done well, but there is always more that we can do.”
