Peace Garden Planting

Saturday, May 14 at 9:00

from Gwen Lehman

This year’s planting of the Peace Garden in Riverfront Park will take place on Saturday, May 14, weather permitting. We will meet at the garden on the riverfront in Harrisburg between Maclay and Emerald Streets and start around 9:00 AM. You can come for any amount of time that works for you, and we'll plan to finish around noon. You’ll need to bring your own hand trowel for digging, gloves, a water bottle and sunscreen.

As in previous years, we’ll have about 1000 small flowering plants to put in the ground. Other than having to kneel on the ground, it isn’t difficult work. It is so rewarding!  People all over central Pennsylvania appreciate what we do there.

More information to follow about parking, a rain date and the like.

Thanks in advance to everyone!

May 2, 2022
Submitted by Karen Good

Meeting opened at 12:10
Steve Schwartz: invocation
Karen Good: America the Beautiful and pledge of allegiance
Beth M. introduced guests.
  • Announcements: Thanks given to Rotarians who helped out with HANNA’s Pantry last week. There were 40 people who came out to pack snack bags and food boxes for students and their families, and those in the community who are food insecure.
  • Rotary District Conference is this weekend, May 6-7. This year it will be at the Best Western off of Union Deposit Road in Harrisburg. Registration is closed, but if you wish to attend, let Matt Staub know and he can get you in.
  • On May 25th there will be a Club Leadership Assembly. This will be at the West Shore Country club, from 8 – 10, all board members and committee chairs are strongly encouraged to attend.
Past District Governor and Past President Janice Black spoke to the club about the life and impact of Past President Robert Hanson. The Hanson Award is being given this year to Rotarian Wendell Hoover. Bob Hanson loved Rotary; he said it was his favorite organization. Bob wanted people in Rotary to grow into leadership and in their creative thinking and planning for Rotary. He started the Hanson lunch, which is an opportunity for those in leadership in the Rotary Club of Harrisburg to gather over a meal and share thoughts and ideas. Bob Hanson also agreed to the Hanson award, which is given to one Rotarian every year. Wendell Hoover meets all 4 of the requirements to qualify for the award. Janice presented a clock to Wendell, and he also will be given a stipend to use towards a trip to a Rotary International Conference.
Wendell Hoover thanked Rotarians, his personal assistant, and his coworkers who were present at the meeting. He thanked his parents, and his wife and children, who were present in the meeting. Wendell said that his parents modeled business ownership to him, as well as the importance of doing things behind the scene. He said he enjoys Rotary, because he is always greeted by positive, friendly people. He loves the topics that are discussed from the podium and thinks the topics are interesting, insightful and thought-provoking. Wendell has been involved in the dictionary project, Youth Exchange, yearly science award, and the Central Penn Food Bank. These are all activities he has enjoyed.
Wendell closed his speech saying “We are all called to give of our time, and also of our resources. We have done well, but there is always more that we can do.”
No meeting next week.
Next meeting is May 16th
Meeting adjourned at 12:45
