January 11, 2021 Meeting Minutes
Submitted by Karen Good
Monday January 11th 2021
President James Good called the meeting to order at 12:01 noon.
Douglas Piper led the club in a thoughtful invocation, and asked God to help us make 2021 a really good year.
Next, Addeline played a video of Nate Hartwig singing “This Land is your Land”, which brought smiles to many faces.
We pledged allegiance to the flag, and reminded ourselves of the words in the 4 way test.
Announcements:
  • Lunch donations today went to the Central PA Food Bank
  • Packing food boxes at the CPFB on 1/25. We have packed 1,000 boxes so far! 5 people read the Roundup and had the correct number of boxes packed, they will receive a mug. Karen Good, Michele Tantardni, Bryan Jones, Toni Mark and Frank Frailey.
  • Safe Haven and the Women’s Shelter are looking for volunteers. Contact Steve Schwartz for more information at sschwartz@ccuhbg.org.
  • Thank you corporate members for your support, it makes it possible for us to engage in many of the projects we do every year.

Meet the board member: President Elect Matt Staub

In 6 months, Matt is hoping to take a podium and not a zoom mike. He’s reaching out to many people, and looking forward to talking with many club members leading up to the new Rotary year.

  A little bit about Matt:
  • Grew up in Central PA. Lebanon valley college, graduated from Temple in 2012 with a master’s degree in economics
  • Sara his wife is also a Rotarian, they live in Midtown, Harrisburg
  • They enjoy traveling, Matt mentioned Budapest and the Bahamas. They own a 16 foot boat that they have enjoyed using this year with friends.

2 things he’s involved with and quite proud of:
  1. HACC foundation board member
  2. Financial officer for The Foundation for Children with Intellectual and Developmental Difficulties
Matt joined Rotary 2014. His Father is a long time Rotarian in the Hanover Club, and is the incoming District Governor. His Mother-in-law Penny is a 2X polio survivor. Matt says it’s hard to see how much Polio affects not only the person who has it, but extended family and friends. Joining the organization that has worked to irradicating this disease is a major reason for him wanting to become a Rotarian.
Matt also mentioned the trip to Haiti in 2017, and getting to experience that with John Judson, as a highlight. He feels blessed to be able to learn from the past presidents who have led during his time.

James Good called for nominations for board officers and directors.
After Matt’s presentation, James recognized outstanding students and teachers.  Several Outstanding Teachers and Students from the Harrisburg School District were recognized during the meeting:

Harrisburg High School- SciTech Campus

Teacher- Kathryn Searfoss

Student- Aneesha Ahmat

Harrisburg High School- John Harris Campus

Teacher- Arlene Soto

Student Joann Ragbeer

Cougar Academy

Teacher- Lora Tittiger

Student- Dinoskhka Mieses Diaz

Dr. Sieta Achampong spoke on behalf of the SciTech student and teacher, who were unable to attend.

Teachers praised students for their diligent hard work, and students praised teachers for being available to help them.
Andy Rebuck: enthusiastically introduced James as a Rotary Bus Driver, with a steady hand firmly on the wheel, foot firmly on the gas, yet ready at any time to slam on the brake to keep us off the guard rail.

President James then spoke to the club. He used ABC’S to show us where we’ve been in the past 6 months, and where we are headed for the rest of the Rotary year.
