A memorial resolution was unanimously approved and adopted by the Club.
After stating the four-way test in honor of Dr. Judson, who lived by its sentiments, we were informed by President Good that the lunch money for our meeting today was donated to Downtown Daily Bread and they would welcome additional donations. Finally, we were reminded that tonight, volunteers would be packing boxes of food at Central PA Food Bank.
After a Star Wars musical introduction, Rotarian Beth Mihmet was the guest for our weekly Meet the Board Member series. Beth provided us with a concise history of her progression personally and professionally from Media, PA to Harrisburg, PA where she joined the Rotary Club in 2014 for networking purposes. Not long afterwards, she realized that Rotary was so much more and has eagerly dedicated herself to many of our service projects. A graduate of Colgate and Temple Universities, not HACC , she currently works for Hospice of Central PA. Married to Sarah, one of their goals is to visit all the national parks in the United States. At this time, they have visited nearly half of them. Beth, may the force be with you and keep you strong!
Program committee member extraordinaire, Mary Oliveira, welcomed Gene Barr, president and ceo of the PA Chamber as our guest speaker. After a thorough introduction which highlighted Gene’s roots from northeast PA to 40 years in politics and business to serving on a variety of national, state and local boards to being an author and ‘film star’, Gene provided us with 10 national and statewide issues that he believes needs to be addressed:
Comprehensive immigration reform
Information (broadband) and transportation infrastructure
Economic-related issues, including a thoughtful discussion about minimum wage
Funding for state and local governments
Liability protection for companies and organizations to be shielded from harmful lawsuits
Unemployment compensation
Political divisiveness
Opioid treatment
Rapid distribution of vaccines
Issues related to our criminal justice system, childcare and transportation
With a few minutes remaining, Gene answered three questions about economics, vaccines and improving early childhood education.
After the last question was answered, James Good expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Club for Gene’s presentation. James also informed us that Geoffrey Roche from Harrisburg University will be next week’s speaker updating us on their multi-million dollar building project.
At 12:56 p.m., James concluded the meeting by thanking attendees saying, “you are what make Club 23 the best club on this planet.”
Respectfully submitted by SKI.
