December 21, 2020 Meeting Minutes
Submitted by Curt Stutzman

The Rotary Club of Harrisburg (# 23 in all the world) met virtually on Zoom at noon on Monday, December 21, 2020. President James Good called the meeting to order with the ringing of the virtual bell at 12:02 p.m Invocation was given by Jeff Boswell, and the song, from the Joy to the Burg production, was “Carol of the Bells,” performed by No Last Call (featuring Rotarians Ted and Lori Reese and others). The pledge of allegiance was shared, along with Rotary Four Way Test. President James also thanked all our corporate sponsors. This week’s lunch money is being donated to Hanna’s Pantry, where 2020 Community Service Award recipient Susan Anthony serves on the board.

Our own Charlie Santiago welcomed special guest, club President Dauris Caccavelli from the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara De Samana, in the Dominican Republic, who shared an update on our jointly sponsored dental clinic. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic this year, their club was not able to host a Dental Clinic. However, the club helped the community by sponsoring home improvements for a family in need. They will look forward to working with us again in late

2021, if all goes well.

There are a number of upcoming service projects, many of which are in assisting the Central PA Food Bank. See the club newsletter for more information and dates. Proposals are being accepted for the Robert D. Hanson Award of Rotary Excellence. This significant recognition includes a seat on the 2021-22 Rotary Board, and a stipend for Rotary Leadership Training, The deadline for submissions is December 31, and these should be sent to Addeline by that time to be considered.

The Rotary Club of Harrisburg Community Service Award for 2020 is being presented to Rotarian Susan Anthony. Ellen Brown introduced the award by indicating that this is usually done during a luncheon in which family and friends are invited, along with the former recipients of the award. Susan is the 43rd recipient of this recognition from the club, and she joins a group of past Community Service Award recipients who have dedicated their lives to serving in very significant ways. Susan serves on many boards, and has been part of the Patriot News/PennLive family for many years. Ellen introduced Cate Barron from PennLive to share a few words about Susan. She highlighted the lifelong commitment to making a difference to organizations including Hanna’s Pantry, the Harrisburg Opera, and Leadership Harrisburg. She is a servant leader, and a former recipient of a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to England. She has received national recognition for her work in many areas, including the Newspapers in Education program.

Susan then shared about her belief that there is nothing more important in this world than a life that affirms service. She shared that this philosophy was part of her upbringing. She affirmed based on her own experience how important Rotary is for establishing long-term relationships, especially as indicated through her lifelong connection to her English family where she lived in 1976 during her scholarship experience. She holds the philosophy that service is about

Feeding Body, Feeding Mind, and Feeding Spirit. Sue then gave examples from the many groups and organizations she is part of in service. She congratulated the many former recipients of the award, and then encouraged all of us during this pandemic to follow all guidelines for protecting each other as a form of service to our community.

After this club meeting’s content, as well as our ongoing club participation during the pandemic, President James reported that Rotary is alive and well in Harrisburg, Central PA and around the world. He reported that our next meeting on January 11 will be a mid-year review, and a look to

the rest of the Rotary year. He sent us out with the message to “Go out and love on someone during this holiday season.” The club meeting ended at 12:54 p.m.

In the spirit of this holiday love, I am fondly yours,

Curt Stutzman, Rotary Recorder for the day
