Salvation Army Needs Volunteers
Here's a wonderful volunteer opportunity. The Salvation Army needs help pulling orders for food pantry clients and for sorting food donations in its warehouse. They now handle twice as much food last year. If you'd like to help, you can sign up for a shift (or 5!)
The Harrisburg Rotary Club had another wonderful meeting celebrating our Hanson Award winner, Ellen Brown. The meeting began at approximately 12:03pm with Jeff Boswell leading the invocation. The club performed the “Pledge of Allegiance” following hearing/singing the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
President James Good’s Comments/Reminders
Next, our president, James Good, shared some information with the club. He urged the club to donate to the Rotary Foundation and mentioned that donators will be entered into a billboard drawing. He also mentioned that it is 2021-2022 committee consideration time and members can access the “Get Involved” button within the club’s website and reach out to committee chairs. Our annual club meeting will be held on May 17th where votes will be cast for the leadership team. The Hilton will host the club’s birthday celebration on Monday, May 3rd and club members should RSVP. The Rotary district conference takes place April 30th through May 2nd and costs $25. James also stated that there is an upcoming volunteer landscaping service project at Susquehanna Safe Haven Homeless Shelter. James also presented a survey about club member preference on additional meetings and Service on a Monday projects. In closing, thanks were given to our corporate members for their support.
Guest of Honor:
The highlight of the meeting was celebration or this year’s Hanson Award winner, Ellen Brown. Janice Black did a very nice job giving a history of Robert Hanson’s many accomplishments and community service as she provided insight into the great man this award honors each year when presented to an extraordinary club member. Janice also noted that a Hanson Committee meets every other month for the purpose of club strategic planning. The Committee consists of current and past club presidents. In closing, Janice congratulated and introduced Ellen who took center stage on Zoom.
Ellen began by sharing that she is honored and humbled to receive the award and introduced family she had in attendance which included her mother, husband and children. Ellen shared that she got to meet Bob as a child and also shared recollection of her father’s influence on the community. Specifically, she told of an article about her father when he was chairman of the United Way and they had their largest campaign to date. The article reflected why her father volunteered and discussed the importance of family. Ellen shared a little about her involvement with the Whitaker Center endowment fund and the color cows that graced Harrisburg streets. Ellen went on to share her feeling that Rotarians being in this together is more important now than ever as we continue to navigate Covid and assist the community. In closing, Ellen thanked everyone for the award and shared a comment made by the late Dr. Judson who stated that we must each do something and that we all possess something of value and have something to give.
Meeting Wrap Up:
James closed the meeting with a reminder about the next meeting on Monday, May 3rd that will feature guest speaker, George Fernandez with Latino Connection. Additionally, he reminded Service on a Monday committee members of their meeting at 1pm.
The meeting officially concluded at 12:43pm.
