The Ride to Eradicate Polio is October 24!

Join us on World Polio Day, Monday October 24, for the Ride to Eradicate Polio in Harrisburg. We will be meeting at 4:00 p.m. at Leadership Harrisburg (3211 North Front Street) and taking off for an hour-long scenic bike ride along the river at 5:00. We’ll return to the LHA office before sunset, and convene at a restaurant nearby for congratulatory refreshments. PDG Una Martone will lead our group along an especially beautiful (and flat!) route with just a few road crossings. You can bring your bicycle or walk or run along the riverfront.

Thank you for your support!

Meeting Minutes
October 3, 2022
Submitted by Ski

At 12:14 p.m., President Mihmet welcomed Rotarians after which we sang America the Beautiful and heard an invocation.

After greeting each other, including those on Zoom, three Rotarians introduced and warmly welcomed Harrisburg -area visitors and a Rotarian from York.

President Mihmet then provided Rotarians with a slide show of photos highlighting recent Rotary events including the Hispanic Heritage Festival, a veterans initiative fundraiser, Service on a Monday activities, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank volunteer activities and participation in Rotary Alternate Meetings.

President Mihmet reminded Rotarians that registering for luncheon meetings by the indicated deadlines helps ensure that there is enough food and seating while keeping the cost as low as possible. She noted that our pancake breakfast will occur on Oct. 8, 2022. She encouraged members to sign up to volunteer and purchase tickets, if they have not done so already. She also encouraged everyone to continue reading the Rotary Roundup and informed those gathered that the Ride to Eradicate Polio was moved from Oct. 1 to Oct. 24, 2022. She then invited John Hickey to the lectern who introduced the speaker, Rick Coplen from Rotary Veterans Initiative.

After showing the attendees a photograph and quote of a veteran who graduated from HACC’s nursing program, Mr. Coplen enthusiastically explained that the Initiative is a program of District 7390. It helps veterans succeed by supporting their education, training and job search opportunities. The Initiative has helped 270 Central Pennsylvania veterans with a total of approximately $250,000 for college scholarships to Central Penn College, HACC and Penn State Harrisburg, stipends or unpaid internships, business bootcamp, combating drug and alcohol abuse and job-specific mentoring by Rotarians.

After the presentation, President Mihmet informed Mr. Coplen that the Rotary Club of Harrisburg was going to donate $1,000 to the Initiative. After a brief reminder of the upcoming pancake breakfast, the meeting ended at 1:04 p.m.
