2010-2011 Officers & Directors take their Rotary Oath of Office. The "Rotary Year" is from July 1 to June 30. A new 2010-2011 year brings new officers, new directors, new committee chairs, but the same Rotarian Commitment to Service Above Self. The Monroe Rotary Club met on Tuesday, June 29 at the Holiday Inn Express, Monroe. Outgoing President Bill LaVoy began the meeting. The primary focus was the installation of new club officers and directors, and the presentation of awards to Rotarians who worked hundreds of hours serving the club and the Monroe community.

Guests of retiring President Bill LaVoy included Bill's wife Michelle and his father, retired Judge William F. LaVoy. Guests of incoming President Don Lieto included his wife Lorna, son and daughter-in-law Andrew and Ashley Lieto, daughters Megan and Heather and grandson Kamden.

Bill thanked club members for the time committed to the club and its activities during his year as club president. As outgoing president he presented the following awards:

Perfect Attendance: Jim Altiere, John Betrus, Serge Bourgeois, Jerry Howe, Don Lieto, Jim Morr and Patty Thompson

Certificate of Appreciation: Victoria Brown and Bill Saul for hitting the ground running as new Rotarians and Dave Yentz for his work on special club projects. Bill Saul was also recognized as "Rookie of the Year" for his extra "short notice" involvement on several club activities.

Distinguished Service Citations for committee and activity leadership above the norm went to Patrick Barley, Jean Guyor, Patty Thompson, Donna Bruck and Jerry Howe. Dr. Howe is retiring as editor of the club newsletter, The Spoke after 46 years.

Presidential Citation Awards went to Don Lieto for outstanding club service, Susan Mehregan and Deanna Sobocienski for their extra responsibilities as ADG and District Membership Liaison, John Betrus for community relations, Paul Howey for his stewardship of the Rotary Foundation and Bush Ahmad for his untiring work in Rotary Youth Exchange.

Josephine Perna-Stahl was honored as Rotarian of the Year for her participation in virtually every club activity in 2009-2010, and her exceptional work leading the Monroe County Service Above Self Banquet and Ceremony

Officially marking Passing the Gavel to the new club administration, Bill administered the oath of office to the club officers and directors for the 2010-2011 year:

Bill LaVoy also remains on the Board as Immediate Past President (IPP).

President Don Lieto thanked IPP LaVoy and the 2009-2010 officers, directors and committee chairs for their service, and all club members for their work and efforts throughout the past year. Reflecting on his 26+ years in Rotary and his leadership role as president, Don told of his induction into Rotary in 1983, and how he has held every office in the club including president (1988-1989). He shared his vision for this second term as president, highlighting the themes of service, integrity and fellowship. Next week will be a Club Assembly and he will discuss committee assignments and plans for the year.

Monroe Rotarians were challenged by President Don to re-invigorate the club, re-vitalize their commitment to Rotary and re-dedicate their energies to serving others locally and globally. More pictures and information may be found in the 2010 Passing of the Gavel Photo Journal.
