Invitation for a joint meeting with Swampscott club on March 8, 2017
Club Members,
President Ray was called by the president of the Swampscott Rotary, Harris Newton, with an invitation for a joint meeting with their Club. They are going to have a speaker, Khaled Khatib, who was the cinemetographer on the Oscar winning film about Syria, "The White Helmets". He is going to be speaking at their regular meeting on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at 12:15. Their website says that they meet at Mission on the Bay, but if a large crowd went to hear this speaker, the venue could change. Given the serious nature of the Syrian conflict, and the Oscar given to the film, this speaker could be very interesting and timely.
I have written to ask the board if they thought that we would want to have our meeting on Wednesday the 8th with their club, instead of Thursday, the 9th. Swampscott needs to know in order to make arrangements.
Here are two links which describe both the film and Mr. Khatib. Please review them so that we can get an idea if the club wants to attend the joint meeting with them that week or not. You may have to cut and paste these addresses into your browser in order to view the information.
If the vote is to go on Wednesday, then I would email the whole club and ask members to identify if they are going to go or not, so that Swampscott can make plans.
The Rotary Club of Lynn has 2 opportunities for service available in the near future.
On Saturday, March 4, 2017, volunteers are needed to distribute food at the Mobile Food Distribution held at St. Mary’s Church parking lot, from 7:00am to 11:00am. This distribution has been greatly attended by Lynn Rotarians and greatly appreciated by the community at large. Please let President Ray know if you are interested by emailing him at rbastarache02@comcast.net or by online registration on www.lynnrotary.org . Once on the website, click on the event and register.
On Monday, March 6, 2017, volunteers are needed to serve dinner at My Brother’s Table in Lynn. This opportunity for “service above self” is very popular with our Rotary Club members and with our new Interact club members. Please let President Ray know if you are interested by emailing him at rbastarache02@comcast.net or by online registration on www.lynnrotary.org . Once on the website, click on the event and register.
Help is needed to produce TIPS more regularly, and, hopefully, in a more exciting manner. This editor is asking if anyone from the luncheon club or from the satellite club could volunteer to help in the production of TIPS. These folks would work with me to produce the newsletter and maintain our website with the information from the newsletter.
This volunteer work would encompass planning newsletter articles, writing occasional articles, and being part of a production team. Coordination could be in meetings or just over the phone and computer. We would cooordinate with our Facebook coordinator, Brenda Ortiz in her work of posting club pictures and events. Interested persons should contact me at: supton01@hotmail.com. This is an important need and we could use our newsletter to let large numbers of folks know about the great work of the Lynn Rotary Club!
