The Relay for LIfe Event is Coming Quickly

As members know, the Rotary Club of Lynn is again participating in the Lynn Relay for Life to be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at DCR Red Rock Park, 188 Lynn Shore Drive, Lynn, MA.  The event will be held from 1:00pm to 10:00pm and will feature a wide variety of events for the public, as well as for those who are walking to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.  It will again feature a Survivors Lap and a Luminary Ceremony, both of which celebrate and honor those who have suffered from cancer.  It will again bring together a community of people whose lives and families have been touched by this dreaded disease.

As of this writing, registered club participants are small in number.  Some members have indicated that they are coming to the event and are walking or donating, but since this is a club event, it would be helpful if more members registered beforehand.

Club members are urged to register and/or donate for the Lynn Relay for Life event and sign up for our team.  Each team member will have a goal of raising $100 and will also participate in the events of the day.  As usual, the team will again be raising funds during the day by selling food and drinks.  To register for the event, please google Relay for Life, Lynn, MA and follow the directions included there.

Any club members who would like to work on the Relay event should email Steve Upton.  Help is needed to plan for this important service project.

Facebook Comes to Lynn Rotary

With the guidance of our District 7930 Communications Director, Amy Luckiewicz, President Elect Ray and Past President Steve have started a Facebook page for Lynn Rotary.  The Account is called "Rotary Club of Lynn, MA".  If you have Facebook, please log on and "friend" our Account.  This way, you will get all the Facebook postings as they happen.  We are hoping that by using Facebook, we can reach a larger audience and hopefully attract friends to our account, attract a wider audience to our events, and potentially inform potential members about the club.  The account is set up, but we are still learning how to use it, so it may be a little slow at the beginning.  But we need you as "friends" for the account, so please sign up and befriend us!!

The number of people reached has risen, which is an indication that folks are receiving our limited few posts so far.  We need members to post to our Rotary page, “like” other posts and help us get the word out about our club.  The use of social media is exciting for our club and could help us in our membership goals.  Please join us on our page!
Dr. Joan McCormack talks with Lynn Rotary Club

Fellow Rotarian Dr. Joan McCormack spoke to the Lynn Club recently regarding a relationship between  dementia and loss of hearing.  She cited a longitudinal study in Baltimore which studied a large number of people over a long period of time.  The results of the study indicate that there is some relationship between loss of hearing and the onset of dementia.   It is felt that untreated hearing losses moved people to become more self isolated with a concurrent loss of mental activity.  It is this loss of mental activity that led to the early onset of dementia.  Given this relationship, it is felt that hearing loss should be treated as soon as it is realized so that a person would not set himself/herself up for isolation and dementia earlier than it would normally happen, if it were to happen.  Club members of all ages were keenly interested in her presentation, whether it was for themselves or parents or siblings.  We were glad to “hear” her presentation!
