Members are reminded that tomorrow is the Habitat Plus Christmas Drive. Members are urged to bring gifts for the veterans at Habitat Plus. Toiletries, staples, and/or cash are all welcomed. The gifts will be delivered next week before Christmas and members are reminded that this is a time for giving to those less fortunate than ourselves. Thank you in advance for all those who are able to contribute to these most needy veterans.
Club member Rich Brangiforte recently held a wine tasting for the club featuring the Stone Barn wine brand, which he and fellow club member Jack Ryder make as a hobby. The Stone Barn brand is bottled in Nahant in Jack’s stone barn and features several kinds of red and white wine. Rich described how he and Jack buy the ingredients for specific kinds of wine (example Malbec, Merlot, etc) then follow a process of settling, fermentation and bottling (by hand!).
After bottling and labeling, they either use or give away the wine to friends and family. Rich also generously gave two bottles of red wine as an auction gift, the funds for which were designated to go to Camp Rotary. Club members were given the opportunity to taste 4 kinds of red and 4 kinds of white wine during the meeting and the following message was heard in the room: “Hey, it’s a wine tasting, not a wine guzzling!”. All in all, it was a great presentation and tasting which the members greatly enjoyed. Thanks, Rich, for the presentation and thanks to you and Jack for the auction wine.
New Daily Item publisher addresses the Lynn Rotary Club
It was a banner day for the club recently when Ted Grant, the new publisher for the Daily Item gave the club an overview of changes planned for the Daily Item. Ted explained that the paper will devote more time to items of local concern and will also begin to serve some of the local immigrant populations more than before. He felt that there is a potential for more paper subscriptions as well as online growth. Though the trend nationally is for less print media, Ted felt that with an emphasis on what is going on locally, in good news, as well as bad, growth will happen. Several members indicated to Ted that they were glad to see some of the good things of the community highlighted in the Item, and that they enjoyed the new direction of the paper. There were many questions regarding Ted’s presentation and club members were very interested in how this change in direction would affect the community.
