Polar Plunge Registratrion is now open

Registration for the 2015 Polar Plunge is open

The Polar Plunge Committee has been hard at work to make the 2015 Plunge the best ever! We hope to not only increase the number of participants, but also to raise over $125,000 to help eradicate Polio. With the help of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and their 2 to 1 match, we can provide over 625,000 vaccinations. All in a day's work. We are just shy of 3 months till the plunge!
 
First of all, we would like to find a club champion who will create some buzz around this event and the impact that we can have as Rotarians. One of our goals this year is to have 100% of the clubs have at least one plunger and provide a $100 sponsorship for the event. Obviously, we welcome and encourage as many to plunge as possible and to have them actively raise money, especially from their friends and family, so that we can be part of history in eradicating Polio from the earth! If we succeed in getting all clubs to commit to $100 sponsorship, we can guarantee that all money raised will go to Polio Plus.
 
Please plunge, donate to a plunger or be your club's champion at this week's meeting, and ask your board to sponsor the 2015 Polar Plunge. With your help we can make this a spectacular event!
 
Registration is open and a district wide email will be going out in the next few days to every Rotarian encouraging them to participate in some way this year, but we wanted to inform you in advance.

Once you have registered, you can edit the automatic goal with any amount that you would like to raisie. Remember, this is a goal not a commitment. Set a goal that will make you proud and one that you can achieve with the proper effort. Once you begin communicating to your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors you will find that your passion for the Plunge and for Polio Plus will generate donations. Try to focus fundraising outside of your Rotary club and engage others to learn about Polio and the threat that remains, and ask them to be part of history as Rotary leads the way in eradication Polio.
 
If you would like to raise money to help end polio but do not want to actually plunge, consider being a virtual plunger and ask for donations to be credited to your page. Then, on January 31, 2015, join us in Gloucester and celebrate an incredible event that can save over a half million lives of children around the world.
 
Youth programs are important to every club and we want to encourage participation in the plunge. Please note the following suggestions:
  • Interact, Youth Exchange, and scholars 18 and over are encouraged to plunge with us and register online! We are even having an Interact t-shirt design contest open to all Interact students (included in our resources)
  • EarlyAct and children of Rotarians are discouraged to plunge in the water due to safety reasons. However, we encourage them to host Purple Pinkie for Penny events, awareness campaigns, and age-appropriate activities. Please bring them to the beach and help them experience this amazing event by holding banners, handing plungers their towels, and just cheering us along! This year, we have a Polar Plunge Resource CD available to help guide you through the process of fundraising within your club and your community. The content includes event graphics, press releases, social media strategies, campaign samples and background information on the Polio Plus initiative and a whole lot more. Your club president should have received the CD and you can ask to borrow it or visit the 2015 Polar Plunge page at the District website.

An Ode to Old Lynn

This Poem came across my desk recently.  Some of our "more experienced" members who are from the city, or who worked in the city for some time, should recognize a number of the memories evoked.  Of course, ahem, this editor, can hardly remember many of these, on account of my "youth"!
 
"Quite a city in it's day
If you didn't make shoes or slippers,
The GE provided your pay.
From City Hall to Market Square
The Commons on a summer night
The fountains dancing in color
And a band concert, what a sight!
Bessie Rolfe, Magranes & Goddard’s
Wonderful stores to shop
Burrows & Sanborn and Rogers
We knew them from bottom to top.
The Warner and the Paramount
The Waldorf and Olympia too
Six acts of vaudeville at the Capital
Plus a movie, cartoon and the news.
Street cars climbing Highland Circuit
The view from High Rock Tower
Going to Boston on the Narrow Gauge
It must have taken hours.
Over at old St. Mary's By gender did we learn
any mingling of boys and girls would be a moral concern.
And when 2:30 rolled around and we were all "set free"
we beat feet over to Hennessey's Spa
The real "in" place to be.
Hanover Circle and Surfside Road
Ocean Street with all the swells,
Broad & Lewis, Union and Market
And the dump with all the smells.
The baloon lady on the 4th of July
The parades that made us proud
The fireworks exploding at Manning Bowl
To the delight and roar of the crowd.
The smell of coffee at J.B. Bloods
The Item & Telegram News
Choosing penny candy at the Red & Gray
And going to Musinskis’ for shoes.
The Boston & Maine crossing Central Square
Over Hovey's and the Dover Smoker
Hunt's and Hennessey's and Connolly's for fudge
Then Stiliano's for a chocolate mocha.
I remember the beaches. I remember the Woods
I remember Lynn Shore Drive.
I remember the day we graduate
It's remarkable we're still alive.
It's been a few years fellow students
Since we passed each other in Lynn
But we'll always be proud we came from,
