The Rotary Club of Lynn will celebrate the birthdays of all members at the meeting of Thursday, June 5, 2014. President Obie has designated the first Thursday of June as our annual birthday celebration, with cake and all! Each member is requested to come in to the meeting with a historical fact that took place in his/her birth year. Each member will be asked to speak on this event and at that time, add a candle to the birthday cake. Each person will pay a fine as well. The person whose birthday falls closest to the celebration will blow out the candles for the club (given that they have the wind!). When speaking each member should talk about their goals for Rotary.
The Lynn Rotary was recently addressed by Madeline Uretsky, a recent graduate of Bishop Fenwick High School speaking as an ambassador on behalf of the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts.
The Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts in conjunction with the national Brain Injury Association has established the Ambassador Program. Under this program, speakers who have suffered brain injuries and concussions help to promote prevention and education about the injury by linking it to their personal history and background. The goals of this program are to increase awareness and reduce the incidence of brain injury by promoting traffic safety; to encourage helmet use: to decrease violent behavior through education: and to increase safety practices.
Last year, Madeline suffered two concussions within five months. The first was in a car accident. The second one happened while playing soccer in her high school game. Madeline told the club how these injuries changed her life. She explained her recovery process and conveyed the message of how to prevent brain injuries. There was lively discussion about brain injuries and club members were appreciative of Medeline’s informative talk and her courage at overcoming the effects of her injury.
Treasurer Art Horgan has requested that club members check with him to see if they have paid their 4th Quarter dues. A number of club members have forgotten to do this, so please check your financial records, and if those dues are not paid, please do so right away!
