2016 Polar Plunge

The 2016 Polar Plunge, a Howling Good Time!

Four stalwart Lynn Rotarians joined hundreds of other District Rotarians in participating in the 2016 Polar Plunge recently.  President Ray, Drew Russo, Mike Clancy, and Sean Donahue all braved the January temperatures and an “angry” sea to help raise funds for the District fundraiser for Polio Eradication in this world.

The plunge was held in Gloucester on a day when a massive storm was belting much of the Eastern seaboard with the far reaches of the storm coming into Massachusetts.  Though the snow had not yet fallen in Gloucester, the wind was howling and the surf was rough with big swells coming in toward land.

A big crowd of Plungers and supporters gathered along the beach in Gloucester waiting for the moment to dive in (and get out fast)!   Many huddled in the tent provided or in the waiting room of the motel there, to get out of the wind and have coffee and snacks.  After the obligatory speeches and pictures, and at the appointed time, there was a rush to the water with cheers from plungers and supporters alike.  It was an awesome sight to see the dedication of Rotarians and supporters in their effort to help people from countries around the world to avoid the scourges of polio.

The Lynn Polio Plungers raised over $1,660 toward the Plunge.  The whole District has already received $65,000 toward their goal of $120,000.  All in all, it was a great experience for the plungers and the friends and Rotary supporters who were there to cheer on the plungers.  As one plunger put it, “it was a howling good time!”.
