A copy of the TIPS Newsletter from April 3, 1922 was recently provided by Gene Hastings for members to enjoy as a reminder of our long proud history in Lynn.  The newsletter contains all kinds of interesting information about the club and the events of it's day.  The speaker of the day was the Hon. T. Hsieh, who was considered "one of the most prominent Chinese commercial representatives in America".  It was interesting to see that the Club was even then interested in the economy of the US and it's relations with China.

 

A party of Lynn Rotarians and "Rotaretties" had recently enjoyed the hospitality of Arthur Pinkham and Earnest Lany at the Lydia E. Pinkham laboratories.  The Lydia Pinkham building still exists on Western Avenue in Lynn and is probably the laboratory that is mentioned.  It is still a working building housing a variety of small businesses in the area.  It has certainly withstood the test of time.

 

Another interesting story was about "Rotary's Big Show" for the benefit of Camp Rotary, a comedy hit called "She walked in her sleep".  The entire cast was comprised of Rotarians and Rotaretties!  It was great to see that they were raising funds for Camp Rotary and to know that it still exists as part of a Rotary project.  If only they could have captured that show on film!

 

One of the vice presidents listed was Wilmot R. Hastings, surely a relative of our own Gene Hastings.  This shows that a Hastings has been a member of Rotary since the beginning days of our Club, and an important part of our club all through the years.  Many thanks to Gene for letting us get a copy of this great memory from our club's past.  To see the copy of the actual TIPS from that date, click on the following two links.  They are a bit light, but are readable, and will give you a good idea of what was going on at that time.  Some members might even remember some of the businesses who advertised in TIPS and who continued in business for many years within the city.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Club member Rich Cuffe wants to remind members that the Special Games are going to be held this year on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at the Lynn Tech Field House beginning at 8:30AM.  The Special Games are a wonderful event held for students in Special Education classes in Lynn and provide a great time for those students.  The Lynn Rotary has been involved with the Special Games for many years and helps fund the games.  Rotarians are asked to attend the Games at least for the opening of the games.  The opening ceremony is a fun colorful event and Rotarians are always there to participate.  Please plan to attend for some time that morning.  This event always leaves Rotarians with a great feeling for having been involved.  Come and enjoy!
