Lightning Strikes Twice, or... it's deja vu, all over again!

No one in the club ever thought it would happen again, but after going through a full deck of cards in our weekly raffle, there were only 3 cards left, one of which was the joker.  It should have been sooooo easy to pick the joker out of those three cards and win the pot.  Club members Ray Bastarache and Rich Cuffe each had a pick.  It should have been so easy for one of them to win the pot, over $800, but noooooooooo, it was not to be.  Each member picked the wrong card, leaving only the joker left on the table!  After the club had stopped laughing (and feeling SO BAD for Ray and Rich), it was decided to put the joker into a new deck of 52 cards and keep going.

This had happed once before, a few years ago, when this editor had both picks that week, from 3 cards.  Sadly, the joker remained and (after the club stopped laughing and feeling SO BAD for me),  it was decided then that the joker would go into a new deck of cards and that the raffle would keep building.  The pot built to about $1,500 before it was finally won.  No one ever thought that this would happen again, but here we are, with a new deck of cards to pick from, AGAIN.  This raffle has produced lots of laughs and is growing by leaps and bounds!

Combined Meeting with Swampscott Rotary, August 6, 2014

The Lynn Rotary Club will hold a combined meeting with the Swampscott Rotary Club to be held at the Tedesco Country Club on WEDNESDAY, August 6, 2014.  Our regular Thursday meeting of August 7th has been moved to the 6th so that both clubs can hear Dr. Deborah Walters address the clubs about her fund raising effort for the children who live in and on the Guatemala City Dump. She will be kayaking over 2,500 miles in her effort.

Why will Dr. Deb Walters will be kayaking over 2,500 miles?

  • To tell the story of the children living in the Guatemala City garbage dump community
  • To share how inspiring the mothers are who labor with grit and perserverence for a better life for their children
  • To talk about the success of the Safe Passage model school that fosters critical thinking, self sufficiency and confidence.
  • To raise funds for additional grades for the school

The combined meeting promises to be a good day for Rotarians to meet each other and share their interests and concerns, as well as to find out about such a worthwhile project.  Don't miss it!! Please plan to attend.

Club Assembly Discussions Continued on August 14, 2014

The Rotary Club of Lynn recently had a Club Assembly to discuss two issues of importance to the club, Membership and the Fall Fundraiser.  It had been proposed to continue this discussion at our meeting of July 31 but the difficulty of rescheduling the previously scheduled speaker has prompted the Assembly Discussion to continue on August 14th instead.  Please remember to check your schedule and be in attendance for that meeting.  Important decisions must be made in regard to these two issues.
