At our meeting of Thursday, October 24th, club members discussed smart phones, their varied uses, and some featured apps. Steve Upton projected the face of his Iphone onto the big screen so that members could see the apps he was discussing. Members were interested in the many varied uses of the smart phone. Those members who did not have smart phones learned about the many different apps that are available and saw a few demonstrated for them. Members who already had a smart phone were interested in learing about two featured apps, Msecure and Yahoo Finance. The Msecure app is an encrypted app which holds all the passwords required for the varied websites that people go to now, and the Yahoo Finance app features ways for members to keep track of investments and the market each day. Barbara Maitland gave members a great demonstration on how to enter a specific stock into the program and how to read the charts and graphs as well as the printed information that is generated on that specific stock. Additionally, she showed members how to compare the results of that investment with the results of the stock market in general.
There was spirited discussion on the whole topic of these smart phones, with questions regarding uses, costs, and cost benefits. There were lots of questions regarding the various apps available, as well as how to use the featured apps. One unanswered question, though, was why Steve had so many unanswered emails? All in all, though, a good discussion was had among members about uses for this modern tool.
The Membership Committee has developed the Home Based Business Initiative, a campaign that provides leads to help attract future Rotarians. It is geared to home-based businesses. The image above is the postcard front and is designed to provide a glimpse of what Rotary is and to develop interest in learning more about Rotary. This program is optional for each club and the cost will be shared by each club and the district based on the number of home-based business in each city or town. Last week every president should have received a mailing with a cover letter describing the program, two sample postcards that demonstrate the personalization that is going to be utilized and a contract form that provides the commitment and the details that clubs would like to include in the promotion. Please review these documents carefully and respond as soon as possible so that you can capitalize on late fall and holiday events that could add further interest. If you have not yet signed up to volunteer at My Brothers Table, there is still time. Email Tom Lynch at thomaslynch@ajameslynch.com. Several members have already signed up and the more the merrier. This is a greatly needed service to our community and well worth the time. Not only do you help others, but you also get an appreciation of what we as Rotarians have in this world. We are working on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 4:30 to 7:30. A small investment in time and labor and a huge return to the community and ourselves.

Thinking about our recent Raffle....
While at work, a woman discovered that she has won several million dollars in the state lottery. She called home and told her husband the good news and said "Pack for a trip!"
The husband asked if he should pack for warm climes or cool climes. "It doesn't matter," she replied, "Just be gone by the time I get home!"
