The Rotary Club of Lynn welcomed two new members recently.  Dace Zalite and Raymond Bastarache were welcomed into the Club and both promise to be great Rotarians.  Dace was proposed by Joyce Elliott and is anxious to get involved.  She has a sister that is very active in a Rotary Club in Latvia so she already has a strong Rotary connection.  She is a film director, writer and poet.  She is currently doing volunteer work in her field.  She is interested in world mythology, swimming and charity work.

 

Ray Bastarache was proposed by Steve Upton and is a retired Deputy Superintend of Schools in Lynn, and a former Head of School for St. Mary’s High School in Lynn.  Ray has already been involved with Rotary in our new Teacher of the Year Award initiative.  He is currently a member of the St. Pius V Parish Council and is interested in reading, religion, travel, sports and leadership.  Ray has already become more involved, volunteering for the Relay for Life committee.

 

The Club is excited about our two new members.  They promise to become good Rotarians dedicated to “Service Above Self”.

The purpose of the Rotary Club of Lynn Teacher of the Year Award is to call attention to the importance of service to the community. The award provides an opportunity to publicly applaud our teachers and to reward those who have demonstrated excellence in their profession by “going the extra mile”. Nominees for the award are solicited from all Lynn schools, public and private. Winning recipients will each receive a cash award as will their school. 

 

All proceeds from ticket sales, sponsorships and ads/tributes in our Program Book will benefit Lynn Rotary’s Scholarship Fund.  Annually our Club awards scholarships to Lynn Senior High School students who are seeking higher education.

The following message from District 7930 cites the results of the recent Polio Plunge fundraiser in which President Obie participated and in which many Lynn Rotarians supported and donated funds.  The District sends congratulations to those involved and identifies the many thousands of vaccines which will be made available to children all around the world.  Next year, let's make it even more successful and fund even more vaccines!!

 

"Rotary District 7930 is the place where a monumental event took place on February 1, 2014. Hundreds of committed Rotarians, Interactors, Rotarators and friends braved the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean in Gloucester, Massachusetts to raise awareness and money to help End Polio Now! Many more, in the thousands, made personal contributions to those plungers to raise almost $80,000 to eradicate Polio from our planet. These donations, when combined with the 2 to 1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, represents a total of almost a quarter million dollars. Since the cost of a single immunization is 60 cents, the 2014 Polar Plunge, along with all those who participated in any way, will provide 400,000 vaccines to children in the hope that they can be free from this disease during their lifetime. We owe a special thanks to the Rotary Club of Gloucester and the Polar Plunge Committee for all their hard work ensuring the success of this event.
