 This Ode to Gene Hastings, longtime active Lynn Rotarian, is a tribute written by Rich Cowdell, Director of Camp Rotary, and Principal of Marshall Middle School. He wrote this ode as a tribute to Gene, for his contributions to both Camp Rotary and to middle school students in Lynn.
There is a man from Marblehead well known to all around,
Not just in Marblehead or his neighboring towns.
He's heard near and far, he's a great communicator.
His voice has traveled world wide. He's a ham radio operator.
He often tells of the glory days, back at the Lynn Item.
When he worked with his brother Bob right beside him.
He has been the face of Rotary for most of his life,
Supported through all by Clara, his wife.
I met him first through Camp Rotary Inc.
With Evan Nystedt, Bill Simpson, and Vince Fredericksen, I think.
All gentlemen of class, with a vision of a place,
Where kids could go for the summer in a wide opened space.
Gene Understood camp and embraced it with passion,
And when he came into camp, it was always in fashion.
He made every meeting and wrote all the minutes,
His newsletters always had great photos in it.
Age never seemed to catch up with Gene,
With undying spunk and spirit, like you've never seen.
On this day we honor you, as you join the ranks,
Of the heroes or Rotary, to whom we owe our thanks!

The Rotary Club of Lynn honored one of their own at it’s meeting of September 26, 2013. Gene Hastings, a club member for 38 years was honored in front of a large crowd of club members and Rotary friends. Several speakers told the audience about Gene’s dedication to Rotary causes and his leadership at both the local, district, and international levels. Club members wanted to thank Gene for the many things he has done for our club over the years and wanted to show Gene it’s appreciation for his efforts at the Club level as well as at the District and International level.
