Whyte Avenue Rotary Newsletter for the Week of May 4th (Apr 28, 2021)

This week we had Linda Hoang as our guest speaker. Linda is one of Alberta's most popular bloggers and social media strategists. Her blog and social media presence shows her passion for supporting local businesses, exploring neighbourhoods, and discovering food and art. Linda is the founder of the Edmonton International Cat Festival. Linda shared her love of cats (and cat puns) with us and how Cat Fest is adapting to the challenges of covid-19. She is also the founder of Instagrammable Wall Guides and she told us how she scouts out, shares, and gives tours of the most interesting walls to use as photo backdrops in Edmonton and other cities. An instagrammable wall tour sounds like a great activity for a future Whyte Avenue Rotary fellowship event! Thanks Linda - your presentation was purr-fect!

Whyte Avenue Rotary held an online 50/50 raffle in support of Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS) during the month of April. YESS has been one of our community partners since our club was chartered over ten years ago. Proceeds raised from this 50/50 will help support the valuable work that YESS does. Thank you everyone for your support of this fundraiser. Congratulations to Mike Brandingen, who took home half of the $3,820 total jackpot.

On Tuesday April 20th, Whyte Avenue Rotary Club members and friends were at the Edmonton Food Bank safely helping sort items and fill hampers for those in need. Thanks to the volunteers who helped out with this event!

Your $1,000 contribution to The Rotary Foundation can help provide all materials necessary for the construction of a deep bore well in India which supplies clean drinking water to more than 300 people, or materials to treat and prevent parasites and anemia for children in Uruguaiana, Brazil, or purchase a tree nursery in Jamaica that will annually produce 5,000 tree seedlings and increase family income for 700 farmers, or provide artificial limbs to 25 disabled persons in Calcutta, India, or buy kitchen equipment for an orphanage in Peru, or provide a cow and animal husbandry training to a widow in Uganda where civil war shattered the economy and children die because of a lack of protein and calcium in their diets, or buy polio vaccine for 2,000 babies in Nigeria, or fund enough textbooks to educate 2,000 children in a school in Papua New Guinea, or provide 20 $50 micro-loans enabling women in Nicaragua to start a craft business to support their families. As you can see, you can have a lasting impact in so many ways with your contributions to our Rotary Foundation.

Online Gala Fundraiser for the Rotary Foundation

This will be a 60 minute fast-paced virtual Gala for The Rotary Foundation (TRF) on Wednesday 12 May 2021, 8:00pm ET (6:00pm MT) designed to help every one of our Rotarians, clubs & districts in Zones 28 & 32 meet and even exceed their 2020-2021 goals for both the Annual Fund and PolioPlus fundraising.

Tickets to the virtual event are $110 USD plus applicable fees, of which $100 is a fully credited donation to TRF - you get a charitable tax receipt and 100 Paul Harris Fellowship points, and your District gets credit towards their Foundation goals.

Rotary International President-Nominee (2022-23) Jennifer Jones hosts the "Red Carpet" opening.
