Project Amigo Canada Society focuses on supporting youth of lower income families in Suchitlan, Colima, Mexico. Without support, these youth would have difficulty achieving even a basic, education. Project Amigo ensures students have access to a continuous education from elementary to tech school or university levels, and the ability to achieve their highest potential.
For the past two years, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue has been sponsoring a Project Amigo student who is elementary school. Project Amigo has reached out to our club to ask if we would consider sponsoring a student at the secondary level, which is a larger financial commitment of $850/year.
Due to the pandemic, many families in the communities Project Amigo serves are dealing with financial difficulty, which resulted in more families applying for support for their children’ education. This September alone, they have accepted more than 40 new students at the secondary level and they are hoping to find a sponsor for each of them.
Below are bios for two of these students in their first year of Secondary School.
Diego is new to the scholarship program this year. He is in his first year of junior high. He lives with his parents and younger brother, as well as his great-grandmother and grandmother. His father is a field worker.
Diego wants to be an agronomist. One of his dreams is to have his own business. He says he feels excited and happy to be part of Project Amigo, “because they give me the opportunity to study and then maybe own a business.”
Diego is responsible for maintaining a GPA higher than 8.5, performing 10 hours of community service a month, attending weekly homework club, and writing to sponsors regularly.
Francisco Jacobo is new to the scholarship program this year. He is in his first year of junior high. He lives with his parents and younger brother. His father is a field worker.

This Global Day of Generosity is an opportunity for all Rotary members to make a big impact with a gift of any size to our 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝-𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐄. Last year, we raised more than ever before — over US$1 million! We’re asking you to help us surpass that this year so that we can do even more good together.
Wow! Time is flying by. I am all settled in London now, which includes my flat and my university. I live in an amazing location which is easy to walk to school, the grocery store, my gym and major train stations/tube stops! I have done my best to make my itty bitty room feel cute and cozy, so I have hung fairy lights, fake ivy vines and some pictures I got off amazon and it is nice and homey now!
University is going well, my professors are incredible and very approachable. The workload is manageable right now, but I know it will continue to increase in difficulty. The mechanical engineering department keeps a close eye out for us and provides lots of resources to support us which I genuinely feel thankful for. They have helped us find new friends in the department through events such as a free river cruise down river Thames, many career workshops and have facilitated study groups to help keep us focused. My cohort is small with only 25 people (23 of which are international students), but this means that we are all becoming friends and have much to learn from each other. I truly love all my classes but the ones that are currently standing out to me are biomechanics, biofluids, tissue engineering and medical imaging. I am currently in 7 classes all at the same time - which is insane but that's the life of a masters student.
Rotary - I had a very busy October with Rotary events. First we had a UK-based scholars orientation on zoom where we learned that there are 125 scholars being hosted in UK/Ireland which equates to HALF of the Rotary scholars in the world! During this zoom orientation we learned from numerous speakers about some of the work going on throughout GB, the impact of Rotary's contribution to Polio and how to engage during our scholar year(s). Next I attended the London-based scholars orientation where I met numerous other scholars, many of whom are studying public health, international relations or economics - so certainly different from my academic path. [They also put an American flag on my nametag.................but all is well.] Following this event I attended the District conference and spoke on stage with the district governor why I chose to study in London. During this jam-packed day we heard from Members of Parliament, advocates, and many other guest speakers. Adrian has been very welcoming and incredibly supportive. I have made friends with two particular scholars named McKenzie and Karissa. Interesting to note I have learned that many scholars had never heard of Rotary before their scholarship let alone be an active member in Interact/Rotaract.
I am really excited to get into a routine here in London while giving my best to my program alongside exploring everything London has to offer. I have attached a few pictures from these events below!

District 5370 Fall Assembly
DISTRICT FALL ASSEMBLY IS BACK!

After a two-year hiatus, our annual District Fall Assembly is back! With the theme Inspiration – Education – Recognition, we will once again gather both in person and virtually on Saturday, November 26 from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM at the Château Nova Yellowhead Hotel, 13920 Yellowhead Trail in Edmonton.
The Assembly is open to all Rotarians, but we highly encourage Presidents-elect and their leadership teams to attend as part of PETS training. Registration fees are free for Presidents-elect, (President-elect fees are covered through your club's PETS Training contribution), $60 for Rotarians attending in person and $25 for online registration. Please note that gaming revenue can be used for training purposes.
