We are all set for our special information evening and social this week. A big thanks goes out to Mike Greaney for his vision, organization skills, and hard work in putting this together. And thank you to all members for inviting friends and colleagues, promoting on social media, putting up posters, and directing people to Eventbrite for tickets.

See you on Tuesday!

Member Spotlight!

Each newsletter we will be focusing on a club member to learn a bit more about them, why they joined Rotary, and what makes them stay. To kick things off I am going to start with a piece about me. Please email your stories so we can keep this going. Use whatever format you like (Q&A, paragraphs, point form, etc).

Hello, my name is Marianne Auch. This is a photo of me helping my dad's Rotary Club in Peachland, BC. It is because of him that I joined. I loved helping out with his club activities, and fundraisers any time I was in town. When my mom passed, I saw the way that Rotary stepped up and helped him out in so many ways. I remember thinking to myself that I wanted to be part of that kind of community! The final factor was when Rotary International added protection of the environment to its areas of focus.

After researching all the Edmonton Rotary clubs, I decided on Whyte Avenue for many reasons. The group was friendly, diverse in ages and backgrounds, the meetings were fun and informal, and the venue is fantastic. I preferred an evening time and I appreciate how meetings are kept to just one hour. And finally, it was the impact that Rotary Whyte Avenue was making in the community and throughout the world. Our hands-on volunteering is held at a variety of charities, and members get to bring in causes important to them to make a presentation and get some financial support.

I worked as a news reporter in radio before moving to a career in education, from which I recently retired after 30 years. My husband and I have downsized to allow us to spend more time in England, where my daughter resides. I also have a son who lives in Edmonton five minutes away from us, and we will be bringing home a new puppy in a few weeks!
