History from An Indigenous Perspective

On Tuesday, Rotary Whyte Avenue members and friends participated in a KAIROS Blanket Exercise. The Blanket Exercise is a teaching tool that helps participants understand the treaties, policies, and events that Indigenous Peoples experienced since European contact to present. The Club took part in this eye-opening workshop in order to learn more about the history of the relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples and to gain a better understanding of our role in reconciliation.

Blankets were arranged on the floor in order to represent land and participants were invited to step into the roles of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples as they went through our shared history from the eyes of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Members and guests then finished the evening with a sharing circle. Big thank you to Michelle Nieviadomy for facilitating this workshop, REACH Edmonton for sponsoring, and for everyone who took part!
