Speaking with Mr. Speaker

The Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue was joined by the 14th Speaker of the Alberta Legislative Assembly this past Tuesday, MLA Nathan Cooper.

Speaker Cooper kicked off his presentation by talking about the great work of Rotary in the community, which had many members nodding their heads in agreement (no surprise that many people online like Rotary too!). He even has a Rotary connection - he was a Rotary exchange student to Australia.

He then talked about the Speaker role of maintaining orderly debate in the Chamber, and to ensure that members conduct their business according to the Standing Orders of the Assembly.  He showed members a fun video he made outlining unparliamentary language, so now Rotarians know to avoid calling people 'talking twaddle' when visiting the Alberta Legislature!

Speaker Cooper explained why he started creating short videos on the Alberta Legislative Assembly as a way of demystifying our democratic institutions. Now he's working to rebuild faith in our democracy one video at a time!

The presentation was complete with appearances from the legislative mace and black rod!  Thank you Mr. Speaker for coming to speak to our club and to everyone who joined!

Rotarians Planning Ahead

A few Rotarians stuck around after our meeting last Tuesday to talk about our club's plans moving ahead.

We discussed what is necessary for the club to transition back to in-person meetings and decided to continue meeting online for the month of June.

Members also discussed fundraising, Rotary Foundation, and district grants - making it an exciting and broad conversation!

Thank you to everyone who joined and provided input!
