Foundation Moment

What is a Rotary Foundation Benefactor?

A Rotary Foundation Benefactor is a person who has notified The Rotary Foundation that they have made provisions in their final estate plans to Rotary for US$1,000 or more, or who has made an outright gift of US$1,000 or more to The Rotary Foundation’s Endowment Fund. Benefactors receive a certificate and insignia to wear with a Rotary or Paul Harris Fellow pin. They are listed in the Benefactor Report and identified in the Club Recognition Summary. Clubs with 100% member support of Rotary’s Endowment are eligible to request a Rotary’s Promise Club electronic certificate. Qualifying support may be a commitment for a future gift to The Rotary Foundation in an estate plan or an outright gift of $1,000 or more to the Endowment Fund. A US$1,000 gift to The Rotary Foundation creates a legacy of helping people live better lives around the world. Today there are over 100,000 Benefactors worldwide. Will you join them by making a gift of $1,000 to Rotary’s Endowment Fund or by leaving a gift to Rotary in your estate?

Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue Neighbour BBQ

Thursday night, our club held a community BBQ at the Strathcona Baptist Church. A group of ten volunteers set up, cooked and served 136 burgers, along with refreshments and snacks to our neighbours who may not have otherwise had a hot meal. There were great conversations had by all and the evening served as a reminder of the importance of human connection - something we’ve all missed through the pandemic.

Thanks to the Mustard Seed for helping to spread the word and bring our community together and to Marilyn Mucha for coordinating.

REMINDER:  There is no meeting this week as we are taking a break for the Thanksgiving Long Weekend.

Reminder!!
If you haven't already, please pay your invoice for your Orange shirt for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Thanks so much!

New Member

Our club has received and approved for membership, the application of ADAM AKBAR.
Adam is currently the Customer Service Coordinator for Westcorp Property Management located off Whyte Ave.  He is a former Rotaract leader with the UoA Rotaract club, attended both Athabasca U and MacEwan studying Education.  He is a charismatic leader who has collaborated with our club while a Rotaractor and is eager to assist with club social activities.
He is bilingual - English & German and has experience as a barista ... ( always comes in handy). Tamara Larson is his sponsor, given her past role with Youth Services at the District.

As is usual with all member proposals, this notice affords all members the opportunity to provide commentary is there is ANY reason why our club should not accept this member to induction and full engagement. After Oct 12 if no objections are received, we will schedule his induction.

Hello everyone!

There is an ever-pressing need to support our community partners in light of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our five previous make-ahead meal events were so well received, we are organizing another one! Again, we are going to make individual meals for the thirteen folks supported by the Skills Society who are living at Melcor YMCA Village.

Our contact at Skills Society and the folks we have provided meals for have expressed great appreciation for all of our previous care packages we have delivered!

I am asking members/friends of our club to make 13 individually-portioned meals to be ready for pick-up (or we may have a centralized drop-off location) on the evening of Tuesday, October 26th. Please have your meals packaged in new, microwave-safe, individual containers. Please label your containers with the name of the meal and the date made. Of note: you do not need to list out the ingredients in the meals/baked goods.

We will have someone deliver the pre-packaged meals and baked goods to Melcor (you can pass your meals along either having been refrigerated or frozen).

The health of our members and the folks we support is of utmost importance. Please do not sign up or make meals if you (or a loved one in your home) are feeling under the weather (whether you have been tested for COVID-19 or not). If you sign up to cook a meal, and become symptomatic of any illness, please be in contact with me and we can find you a replacement.

Please make sure to follow hand hygiene practices when shopping, prepping and packing your meals - let's all do our part to minimize the risk of spread of disease.

Of the 13 people whom we are meal prepping for, 2 of the individuals are living with diabetes. Please be concise of making your meal 'heart healthy' with reduced sugar content. If you need help meal planning, please don't hesitate to reach out! There are no other allergies or food intolerances to be aware of for meal preparation.

If you want to support this initiative but are unable to cook or bake meals, please reach out to me and we can figure out where your efforts are best suited.

I will be in touch with each of the volunteers to arrange pick-up times on the evening of October 26th.

Thank you!

Clubs are craving community service events and here are the details in case you’d like to support one this month with the Rotary Club of Edmonton South!

Here are the details -

The New Members are spear-heading a club service project to show appreciation to the 130 Ambulance Dispatch workers of AHS. This group deploys all ground and air ambulances in Central Alberta. Like many AHS workers, they are overwhelmed and struggling. Many companies have generously reached out to hospital frontline staff, and this group has gone unnoticed.

Our project? To gather donated goods (outlined below) to bring them cheer and show up on 2 separate occasions to give them their "treat bag."

Our list of desired goods we would like donated:
-pen (these were cut out of their budget a couple years ago) - covered in part by Jean Walrond & organization
-sticky notes (these were cut out of their budget a couple years ago) - covered in part of Dawn Harsch & company
-microwave popcorn
-gum
-chocolate bars
-candy
-hot chocolate sachets
-water bottles - covered by Dawn Harsch & company
-small gift certificates (coffee, ice cream stores, etc)

Our call to action:

You could help us in any of the 4 ways:
consider donating financially to the project (we have $100 committed already from members)
connect us with an individual/business who is willing to donate some of the items on the list
attend the "treat bag" stuffing party (hosted by Patrick Newman, date TBA)
show up in-person on one of two dates to deliver the treat bags and offer a round of applause for the staff on shift change (dates TBA - aim by end of October)
Please let us know if and how you could contribute to the project. We appreciate your resources, connections, and time to make this a big success.

Tony Baumgartner  587 341-9394
