Volunteers needed for Christmas Dinner with Mustard Seed
Your help is needed!
Volunteers are required for the following event.
Join us as we work with the staff, volunteers and community members of the Mustard Seed to serve and enjoy Christmas Dinner together!
We are working alongside the Mustard Seed to support their Christmas Dinner for folks experiencing homelessness who access the Neighbour Centre. Our club has a long history of supporting this Christmas dinner - we had a few year hiatus due to the big C.
The Mustard Seed has asked that volunteers are 18+.
If you can't be there in person, we are accepting desserts we will serve. Desserts need to be made in a commercial kitchen. Please purchase desserts for roughly 12 people. Volunteers will put together dessert plates with a small sampling of multiple treats.
We are also asking for donations of blank cards. The cards will be available at the dinner tables for community members to write cards for their loved ones.
We are also asking for Christmas decorations if you have any to spare. Is there a string of lights, an old Christmas tree, or a set of candles that you have been meaning to pass on? Kristin will happily take it off your hands and pass along to the decorating committee.

Join us on Tuesday, December 13th from 6-8pm at the Skills Society to join in the fun!
We will work together to load up the stockings with all the donated goodies. Please meet Arshi and Kelly at the front door of the building to load up the stuffers at 5:45pm (if you're able to come a bit early).
These stockings are greatly valued by the people supported by the Skills Society and for some it may be the only gift they receive at Christmas time so thank you to everyone who can help!
Project Amigo Canada Society focuses on supporting youth of lower income families in Suchitlan, Colima, Mexico. Without support, these youth would have difficulty achieving even a basic, education. Project Amigo ensures students have access to a continuous education from elementary to tech school or university levels, and the ability to achieve their highest potential.
For the past two years, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue has been sponsoring a Project Amigo student who is elementary school. Project Amigo has reached out to our club to ask if we would consider sponsoring a student at the secondary level, which is a larger financial commitment of $850/year.
Due to the pandemic, many families in the communities Project Amigo serves are dealing with financial difficulty, which resulted in more families applying for support for their children’ education. This September alone, they have accepted more than 40 new students at the secondary level and they are hoping to find a sponsor for each of them.
Below are bios for two of these students in their first year of Secondary School.
Diego is new to the scholarship program this year. He is in his first year of junior high. He lives with his parents and younger brother, as well as his great-grandmother and grandmother. His father is a field worker.
Diego wants to be an agronomist. One of his dreams is to have his own business. He says he feels excited and happy to be part of Project Amigo, “because they give me the opportunity to study and then maybe own a business.”
Diego is responsible for maintaining a GPA higher than 8.5, performing 10 hours of community service a month, attending weekly homework club, and writing to sponsors regularly.

We are pleased to announce that the Rotary e-Club of Canada One has a NEW Food Insecurity Committee!
Our first project starts in Canada. Based on the latest data from Statistics Canada’s Canadian Income Survey, 5.8 million Canadians, including 1.4 million children, lived in food-insecure households in 2021.
In a recent article, with the headline "Child hunger a major concern as Canadians hit by soaring food prices, it was noted that "about a third of people who rely on Canadian food banks are children". Many food banks across the country are reporting a 20 to 30% jump in demand. As prices continue to rise, food policy expert says things will only get worse.
According to Food Banks Canada, 23% of Canadians reported eating less than they needed to because they did not have enough money for groceries. Now, more than ever, they need our help.
As we plan behind the scenes for a large event next October, we invite Rotary members to participate in a year-long Food Bank Donation Challenge, building up to the event.
Each month, we'll post a suggested list of 5 items. These may include non-food, necessity items. Feel free to play along and purchase those items, or items of your choice, and deliver them to your local Food Bank. Or, you may want to check with your local food bank first to see what they are low on at the moment. Alternatively, you may prefer to provide them with a monetary donation or monthly pledge.
Invite your friends, family, colleagues, and social media connections to participate. We ask everyone to keep track of their donations and, at the end of each month, submit them to Kitt at kittbrand@gmail.com, so we can track the impact of our contributions. Let's see what the power of Rotary can do for our food banks!

Imagine One's Dream" a limited-edition print, signed and dated by Darren Jones, a Chicago artist and brother to Jennifer Jones, is being auctioned on-line between November 26 and December 19, 2022. Funds raised through the auction will be designated for the Polio Plus fund.
The "Imagine One's Dream" original painting was a combination of acrylic paints, industrial staples, shredded studio paperwork, plaster and beach sand painted on wooden panel. For this piece, Jones used beach sand from their family cottage in Ontario, and paper he shredded and used from the Rotary website to include the "Objects of Rotary and the Four Way Test." After the textures were layered and dry Jones said he began the colour process by literally applying paint to his hands and then onto the panel. The colour palette was inspired by the colours of Rotary and the Presidential theme. "The gradient shading is also done on purpose to create a more landscape emotion, representing the horizon we all walk towards!!" states Jones.
The numbered print includes a signed Certificate of Authenticity and is valued at $800. It has been framed and would be a beautiful addition to a home or office to reflect the importance Rotary plays in the lives of people around the world.
