This past Tuesday, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue was joined by Karen Mottershead, Executive Director of the Terra Centre. Terra is a non-profit organization that provides supports and services that empower teen parents to succeed. Karen shared with us about the work that Terra does, such as partnering with Edmonton Public Schools at Braemar School for more than 20 years to support student parents completing their high school diploma. Through multiple on-site services, students can concentrate on both their studies and their new role as a parent. Karen also shared how Terra is coping with COVID and how they are trying an online improv fundraiser called Laughs over Lunch. Sounds like a great way to support Terra and have some fun!
Mustard Seed Dinner2Door Program

The Mustard Seed has launched its Dinner2Door program which delivers hot meals to Edmontonians in need who are unable to access regular food programming due to isolation or social distancing. The contactless-delivery system ensures those living in poverty still have access to warm meals even during such unprecedented times.

Mustard Seed volunteers safely prepare, freeze, and package “take-away” meals, which are then delivered to the doors of registered individuals and families across the city, five times a week. In compliance with COVID-19 protocols outlined by Alberta Health Services, volunteers maintain safe social spacing at all times.

Delivery drivers are needed to pick up pre-packaged, frozen meals from the Mustard Seed Location (10635 96 St NW) on September 29th and every Thursday in October. We need 3 drivers per shift. Sign up for one Thursday or as many dates you can help.

Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check
All Rotary club members are asked to complete a Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check for situations when you may be in a position of trust or authority of vulnerable persons, such as children under 18 years of age, the elderly or the disabled. It is important that all club members have a current VPRC when volunteering in the community. A VPRC must be redone every three years. Unfortunately, an information check done for another organization cannot be used to complete this requirement.
 
The Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check can be done online for $15 with a volunteer letter from the club.

Camp at Home for Hope
This September is The Mustard Seed’s first-ever Camp at Home for Hope weekend! This one of a kind event will bring communities together across Alberta and in BC to help eliminate poverty and homelessness in a weekend of good fun for a good cause.
       
So what is Camp at Home for Hope? On the September 19th weekend raise a tent and roll out the sleeping bags. Camp in your living room or your backyard and raise money to help the most vulnerable members of your community.
 
Register today to participate in the first-ever Camp at Home for Hope weekend and help us take a big step towards reducing poverty and eliminating homelessness in your community.
Highway Cleanup Community Service Event
The Rotary Club of Edmonton West club is doing a Highway Clean-up community service event on Saturday September 26th and has invited Whyte Avenue club members to join in.
 
There is a section of Highway 16 that the club will be ridding of rubbish. They are meeting at A&W in Acheson at 10am on the 26th and will pick up garbage for a few hours.
