Over $1500 Raised In Support Of Edmonton's Food Bank

(Rotary Whyte Ave & friends volunteering at Edmonton's Food Bank in October 2019)

In typical Rotary Whyte Avenue fashion, our club members and friends came together to provide overwhelming support for a great community partner - Edmonton's Food Bank!

The Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue regularly volunteers with Edmonton's Food Bank. In March, to help this community partner continue to provide food items and services for Edmontonians in need during the COVID-19 outbreak, the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue made a commitment to cost-match monetary donations to Edmonton's Food Bank up to $500.

And Rotarians rose to the challenge!  Rotarians and friends dug deep to support and made a total of $703.00 in personal donations!  Amazed by this response, the club went beyond the initial $500 cost match commitment and matched the entire amount of $703.00!

To make the donations go even farther, the club's cost-matched donation was made through ATBcares, which matches 15% of donations made in Alberta. This led to a total of $1511.45 donated to Edmonton's Food Bank!  Way to go everyone!

The generosity and community spirit of this club knows no bounds, thank you to everyone who donated!

Thank you all for supporting Edmonton's Food Bank!

Supporting Community Members Through Social Work in Old Strathcona

This past Tuesday, Community Development Social Worker Nor'Ali McDaniel joined Rotary Whyte Avenue for an online meeting to talk about her incredible work in Old Strathcona.

Nor'Ali has been working as a Community Development Social Worker with the City of Edmonton since 2018. Before this role, she worked in non-profits focused on addressing issues of poverty, homelessness, and harm reduction in Alberta, including six years at Bissell Centre with the Housing First team in both front-line and supervisory positions, and three years with the Wood Buffalo HIV/AIDS Society working on hepatitis C education and a needle exchange program.

Nor'Ali talked about her efforts to make a caring, connected, and inclusive Edmonton where people are connected to the supports they need. As part of her presentation, Nor'Ali shared a video on a day in the life of an ethnographer to help the audience understand their relationships with street-involved individuals (you can watch the video here: https://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/initiatives_innovation/recover-research.aspx). She also talked about some of the great supports available in the city that she works with, including Food Deserts and Fresh Routes.

Thank you for joining us Nor'Ali and thank you to everyone who came out!

Donate Your Coffee Cups To OFSS Through The Coffee Cup Roundup
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our club was not able to support the Operation Friendship Senior's Society (OFSS) by preparing lunch in-person this month as we initially planned. In the meantime, we have come up with another way to help support OFSS: The Coffee Cup Roundup. OFSS accepts donations of new or used coffee cups to use in their centre and it would be great to help them out by collecting cups.

Please check your cupboards and if you find some coffee mugs that you don't use, set them side and our amazing President-elect Stan B will collect them from you and deliver them to OFSS when it is safe to do so. If you would like to get the cups out of your house right away, and feel comfortable dropping them off on my front porch, feel free to email Stan (s_bissell@hotmail.com) to coordinate a drop off time.
