ShelterBox Canada Expresses Gratitude for our Support

Last Tuesday we heard heartfelt thanks from ShelterBox Canada's Ally Buck as our club made a donation of $7,000 for 26/27.

ShelterBox works with disaster-affected communities to provide emergency shelter, essential items, and training needed to support families in the long process of rebuilding their lives. Below is a small sample of what they provide.

Ally shared an overview of the program, the locations in which ShelterBox is currently having an impact, as well as recent changes to improve ease of delivery. Now in its 26th year, the organization has helped over 3.5 million people in over 100 countries.

Right now over 120 million people are currently displaced by disaster or conflict around the world.

ShelterBox in action!

Member Spotlight

Each newsletter we will be focusing on a club member to learn a bit more about them, why they joined Rotary and what makes them stay. This week we feature Kelly Sysak.

Here is Kelly receiving her Whyte Knight Award from Tamara in 2023.

Why I joined Rotary Whyte Avenue: I was volun-told by my former boss and mentor Ruth Kelly to come to a Rotary meeting. I went with her and then she told me that they were going to try and get a club started on Whyte Avenue and she thought I should join. I met with Jeff Reynolds and we started talking about what a Rotary Club would look like that we wanted to be a part of. We wanted a club that was full of energetic people who wanted to really get involved with the community. People who wanted to support it and make it better. We wanted a diverse collection of people. We would respect people no matter their ethnicity, sexual orientation, how they presented - no matter what, the door would be open. There were some things done in Rotary meetings that we thought were no longer necessary or too old school. We removed those. We had a lot of push back the first year, but we stuck to our beliefs. I'm so glad we did.

Our members are such an amazing collection of people who are dedicated to making things better on a local, national, and international level. I have been inspired by our club and its members multiple times. I'm proud to be a member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue.
