ROTARY DAY OR SERVICE EVENT

Date: Wednesday March 2nd 2022
Theme: Empowering Women and Girls
Action: Organize a Secret 3k Run / Walk in your community inviting our Family of Rotary and potential members
Goal: 400 participants (District & Beyond)
Charities: Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan,
Afghan Sports Trust, 261 Fearless
Girls and women don’t have the same access to sports in many places around the world. Zainab, an athlete from Afghanistan, was told she couldn’t run because she is a woman. But she did it anyway. In 2015, she became the first Afghan woman to complete a marathon in her own country. Now people around the world participate in The Secret 3K, a Canadian charity run to promote gender equality and participation in sport.
• The Secret 3k is a global movement to promote gender equality in sport, particularly running.
• The Secret 3k supports safe and inclusive running/walking/rolling for all.
• In Canada, girls and women drop out of sports at much higher rates than boys and men. (In adolescence, 1 in 3 girls drop out, compared to 1 in 10 boys, see resources for reference
What can your Rotary Club do to participate?
  1. Organize a 3k Run/Walk and Register for the National Event   https://www.secret3k.com/
  2. Align the focus of your weekly meeting towards this theme, or meet to walk/run during “Celebrate       International Women’s Week”, the first week in March beginning on the first Saturday and surrounds International Women’s Day which is always March 8
  3. Sponsor a school or youth group (K – 6 and middle school age) EarlyAct/Interact Clubs!
Students will learn about challenges many women and girls face around the world to participate in physical activity and sports. Students will be introduced to the story of The Secret Marathon and The Secret 3K and will be invited to participate. Students will then have an opportunity to think about and set their own goals and develop an action plan of how they can achieve them. Teachers will have the option to provide an extension activity to further reflect on issues of freedom and equality. https://www.secret3k.com/school
  1. Read the Book!  The Secret Marathon by Martin Parnell
  2. Watch the movie!  More details coming on February 17, 2022
  3. Find local youth group(s) and sponsor them to participate in the race or the lesson plan.
  4. Encourage or sponsor your Rotaract club to seek out the University package.

Organizing a Run/Walk – Some Tips

  • Find Rotary Secret 3k champions in your community or the community surrounding you – to plan together
  • Check in with any local running groups or stores – they will have thoughts about a 3 k route that is accessible and not weather dependent.  Check with your municipality regarding registering events.
  • Search your community for International Women’s Week events (help to promote those and they would probably promote your run/walk as well.
  • Research COVID-19 restrictions – plan the event in order to move it to virtual if you need to.
  • Meet with your local Ethnic associations or Immigrant Services
  • Find health and wellness folks
  • Promote your event everywhere and encourage registration to the Secret 3k
  • Celebrate your event!
  • Have your weekly meeting outside doing a 3k, and fellowship to follow.
Here is a link to a great planning document!!
