Patrick Gibson, Director of International Services for the Strathcona Rotary Club, joined us at our Tuesday meeting to tell us the story of their experience investing through Kiva , a global leader in micro-financing.
Unlike a conventional donation, money invested through Kiva is distributed as low interest loans with defined repayment schedules. Monies repaid can be rolled into another loan for a different business, making it easy for a very small monthly investment to grow into something truly impactful.
In just three short years, Strathcona Rotarians have funded more that 675 micro-loans in 55 countries, helping to fund opportunities for business people in developing nations who have no access to conventional financing.
Not only has the club put more than $17,000.00 to work around the world, but they have also created a Lending Team of like-minded individuals, both within and outside of Rotary, creating even greater impact. The team has funded nearly 1,500 loans, earning them the #7 ranking out of approximately 1,800 clubs registered with Kiva.
Loans start at as little as $25.00 US, with lots of flexibility to choose what type of business you want to support, and where you want to invest. Visit the Kiva website to learn more, or to start putting your money to work.
